Anyone who has visited Sydney Central Business District(CBD) in the last ten days is instructed to monitor for symptoms of the potentially life-threatening Legionnaires' disease after six individuals were diagnosed.

Legionnaires' disease is a critical kind of pneumonia that develops once a bacteria, known as Legionella pneumophila (Legionella), severely infects the lungs.

Notably, the diseases spread through the aerosols instead of person to person contact.

New South Wales Health South Eastern Sydney Local Health District Public Health Unit director Vicky Sheppeard stated, that the six cases "have a common factor of being in the Sydney CBD during their exposure period"​..

​A person has died from Legionnaire’s disease after contracting it almost a month ago in Sydney’s CBD.

NSW Health says a further 12 cases of the disease have been confirmed, with all those infected having spent time in Sydney CBD between March 13 and April 5.

Eleven of the 12 cases are currently hospitalised, while the other patient is being treated out of hospital.

Legionella bacteria has been found in a cooling tower in the CBD, which is now being decontaminated and subjected to further testing to determine if it was the source of the outbreak.

Anyone who was in the Sydney CBD between this period is advised to stay vigilant of Legionnaires’ disease symptoms, which include chills, coughing, shortness of breath and fever.​..

A Legionnaires outbreak in inner-east Sydney has claimed one life and hospitalised six others since late May.

Health officials are continuing to investigate the source of the disease outbreak in Potts Point.

South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) along with the City of Sydney are inspecting and testing potential contaminated water sources near where the disease broke out.

A man in his eighties who contracted the Legionnaires’ disease in late June died from the infection.​..
