Urgent' public health concerns raised as whooping cough cases reach nine-year high

Whooping cough cases across Australia have exploded this year, with infectious disease experts saying reported numbers are cause for "serious public health concerns".

There have been 21,336 notifications of pertussis to the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System in 2024 so far.

This is the largest spike of cases since 2015, when 22,571 cases were recorded.

There were 2,451 cases recorded for the whole of 2023 across Australia, a spokesperson for the federal Department of Health and Aged Care told the ABC.

The number of whooping cough cases are the highest they’ve been in six years in South Australia.

The number of whooping cough cases are the highest they’ve been in six years, prompting South Australian health officials to urge pregnant women and children to get immunised.

SA Health said whooping cough cases are currently 10 times the number they were this time last year.

The infection, also known as pertussis, can be serious or fatal for young children or babies.

So far this year, 492 cases have been recorded.

Whooping cough waves generally occur every four to five years, with the last wave in South Australia being in 2016 and 2017 when over 1500 cases were recorded in both years.​..
