An alert has been issued by SA Health after a 48-year-old Adelaide woman was admitted to hospital in a critical condition, after contracting a case of the invasive and highly contagious meningococcal disease.

About 1000 students at a Queensland high school have been given antibiotics after the discovery of three meningococcal cases.

The cases have been discovered at St Mary’s Catholic College in Cairns this week. One is a teacher and two are students.

Two of the patients are in hospital, while the other one has been discharged.

On Friday, health authorities rolled out the antibiotics in a bid to stop the disease from spreading...

Two-year-old SA child dies after contracting meningococcal disease

A two-year-old child has died after contracting meningococcal in rural South Australia.
SA Health described the case of "invasive" when they reported the death today.
Multiple people the child came into contact with have been identified and 15 of them given clearance antibiotics.
"There have been seven cases of invasive meningococcal disease reported in South Australia this year, compared to six cases recorded at the same time last year," SA Health said.
"Of the seven cases this year, all have been typed as serogroup B."
It's the first death from the virus this year in the state. Three people died last year, out of 12 cases...

NT man dies with meningococcal disease

A man has died with meningococcal disease in Darwin, as the Northern Territory records its second case of the illness this year.

The man in his 30s, who died on Tuesday at Royal Darwin Hospital, had no recent interstate or international travel, NT Health says.

"We send our condolences to this man's friends and family," a spokeswoman said on Friday.

The NT's centre for disease control is providing information and care to the man's close contacts.

The second case was a woman in her 30s from Alice Springs, who was diagnosed in February. The two cases are unlinked.

It comes after a 14-year-old boy in Adelaide was diagnosed with meningococcal on Tuesday.

There have been nine cases of the disease in South Australia this year, compared to six at the same time last year.

A Sydney man in his 40s died with the disease on August 4 after he attended the Splendour In The Grass music festival in Byron Bay.

There have been 15 cases of meningococcal disease reported in NSW this year...

The Department of Health today reported that two children, who are related, have been diagnosed with meningococcal disease and are recovering. The serogroups for both cases are not yet available. There is no wider health risk to the public.
Meningococcal disease is an uncommon, life-threatening illness caused by a bacterial infection of the blood and/or the membranes that line the spinal cord and brain, and occasionally of other sites, such as the throat, lungs or large joints.
To date in 2022, thirteen meningococcal cases have been reported in WA; six were serogroup B, three were serogroup W, two were serogroup Y and two cases are pending serogroup information.
There are two types of meningococcal vaccines available: one protects against four serogroups of the meningococcal disease (serogroups A, C, W and Y) and the other protects against serogroup B.
The MenACWY vaccine is offered free to all children at 12 months of age. In addition, the MenACWY vaccine is offered to all Year 10 students, with a free catch-up program for 15-19 year-olds.
Due to a higher rate of meningococcal disease in Aboriginal children in WA, the MenACWY vaccine is offered free to Aboriginal children from age 6 weeks to 12 months of age. The menB vaccine is free for all Aboriginal children aged up to 2 years of age. Both these vaccines are also free for people of all ages with certain medical risk conditions. People not eligible for free vaccines can request them through their immunisation provider for a fee...

This year’s meningococcal cases have already overtaken last year’s total as more Australians are socialising post-covid.

Cases of invasive meningococcal disease have risen to 86, ahead of last year’s total of 74, according to National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System data.

Infectious diseases paediatrician Professor Robert Booy, from The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, said cases were rising as people were socialising indoors for longer periods after the end of covid restrictions...
