Health authorities have confirmed the first cases of measles in Tasmania in five years.

A man in the state's south and a teenager in the north-west have both been isolated to minimise the chance of the virus spreading.

"There are several other cases on which we're awaiting test results," said director of public health, Dr Roscoe Taylor.

The Health Department has contacted more than 100 people it says are at risk of infection, and it believes several more cases are likely.

The two confirmed cases are separate and both people have recently travelled interstate or internationally...

Measles cases at 15-yr high

Cathy O'LearyMedical Editor
The West Australian

Measles is being diagnosed at the rate of one a week in WA this year, with the highest number of cases in 15 years.

The surge has prompted doctors to call for upgraded travel warnings about vaccination, especially for young adults, and renewed efforts to ensure children are fully immunised.

Thirty-nine cases have been reported so far this year, compared with 14 for all last year and six cases in 2012.

It is the highest number since 1998, when 50 cases were reported and health authorities embarked on a mass vaccination of 1.8 million Australian children, or 96 per cent of all primary school students.

The WA Health Department said more than half the cases this year had been children, most of them unvaccinated, while 44 per cent had been adults aged 20 to 40 who were unvaccinated or had only one dose as children.

WA Health Department's new warning on measles
December 17, 2014 - 6:17AM
Reporter, WA Today

The Australian Medical Association says the current spike in measles cases in Western Australia was the result of misinformation online leading parents to not vaccinate their children.

The number of measles cases in 2014 is greater than the total recorded in the previous three years combined and AMA (WA) president Michael Gannon said the most recent figures indicated misinformation might be a factor, with WA's currently immunisation rate at 90 per cent...

...The Health Department has recorded 39 cases of measles this year, compared to 14 in 2013, six in 2012 and 16 in 2011 and Dr Gannon said recent cases were children, teenagers or young adults whose parents may have been misinformed by inaccurate reports that suggested a link between measles vaccinations and autism...
