Measles outbreak linked to Sydney dance festival

A measles outbreak that began at a hip-hop dance festival in Sydney has spread across the country and overseas, leaving at least 14 people infected and tens of thousands of people exposed to the disease.
The outbreak began when a Filipino man with flu-like symptoms competed in the festival, attended by more than 2000 people in early December.
A 10-year-old girl in Adelaide was next to fall ill. She too had been at the festival.
Then a woman in Auckland was diagnosed. And a person in Sydney. And nine more people in Turangi and Taupo in New Zealand - six of whom had not gone to the competition, but knew someone who had.

Most recently, a 21-year-old man from Melbourne fell ill, but his symptoms only emerged after he had spent Boxing Day amid the throngs of people taking advantage of Christmas sales at the city's busiest shopping centre. He too had attended the festival...

Victoria?s Chief Health Officer has issued a warning on a measles outbreak, possibly stemming from the Philippines, that may have infected Christmas shoppers at Melbourne?s biggest shopping centre.

AN 18-year-old woman is recovering at home after contracting the highly infectious measles virus, prompting SA Health to issue a public health alert today.
It is the second case of measles in South Australia so far this year and is believed to be linked to a previous case reported in late December....

A MEASLES warning has been issued by the Health Department amid fears visitors to a Perth cinema may have been exposed to the highly-infectious disease.
Anyone who visited the Garden City Hoyts Cinema Complex in Booragoon around noon on January 8 is warned to watch for symptoms of the disease between now and January 26.

Residents warned after measles case in Western Downs region

WESTERN Downs residents have been warned to be on the look out for symptoms of measles after a man in his 30s was diagnosed with the serious condition on January 14 at Wandoan.
The man, who did not know he was infectious, arrived in Brisbane on a Qantas flight from Adelaide at approximately 3pm on January 6, 2014.
On the same day, the man travelled via a private 12-seater vehicle from Brisbane to Wandoan, stopping at the following locations:
KFC, Bridge Street, Toowoomba, 6.30pm
Shell Service Station, Dalby approximately 7.30pm
Wandoan, 9pm
Darling Downs Public Health Unit director Dr Penny Hutchinson advised anyone who was at those locations, at those times, to be on the look out for symptoms of the disease...

...The 34-year-old Adelaide woman with the disease is the 17th case of measles in SA since October, the majority either acquired in Bali or caught from someone who had travelled there recently and contracted the illness. The other cases are linked to the Philippines.

Measles alert for Brisbane area

Queensland Health has issued a measles alert for the Brisbane area after a man contracted the highly contagious disease overseas.
Metro North Public Health Unit Director Susan Vlack said the 40-year-old man, from Wavell Heights in the city's north, is recovering after being hospitalised on January 17.
"The person developed measles as the result of exposure in the course of travel," she said.
Dr Vlack issued a list of places the man had been, including Red Rooster in Nundah about noon on January 12, Clayfield Markets Seafood later that night and Cardiotech Nundah in the four days following.

The man also attended the Banyo Medical Centre on January 15 and 17, QML in Banyo on the 15th and the Mater Hospital on the 17th.
He took a Yellow Cab ride near the hospital on January 17 as well...

Recent travellers between the Philippines and Sydney and Sydney to Brisbane have been urged to alert for measles symptoms.
A man from Brisbane?s southside has been diagnosed with the high contagious disease and Queensland Health officials have warned he was likely to have been contagious when he flew on Qantas from the Philippines to Sydney and then continued on a domestic leg back to Brisbane, on January 21.
Anyone who may have visited the IGA at Carina on January 22 could also be at risk at contracting measles...

A BRISBANE man has contracted measles, becoming the second person diagnosed on the city's southside in less than a week.
Metro South public health physician Brad McCall said the man was likely to be infectious when he visited numerous retail stores and a barber shop on Boundary Street, West End, during January 22 and 23.
Dr McCall said the man also shopped at the Coles Supermarket in West End last Friday and was a passenger on the Stradbroke Island barge at 5pm the same day....

A second case of measles has been detected in the ACT within weeks, sparking a fresh warning to Canberrans potentially exposed to the highly contagious disease...
That includes anyone in the following locations:
The Rose Cottage Restaurant at Gilmore on Saturday 25 January 2014 after 5.30pm;
The Canberra Church of Christ in Weston on the morning of Sunday 26 January 2014;
Westfield Woden on Monday 27 January 2014 between 3pm and 6pm;
Centrelink in Tuggeranong on Tuesday 28 January 2014 between 9.30am and 1pm;
Tuggeranong Hyperdome on Tuesday 28 January 2014 between 11am and 3pm; and
Canberra Hospital's Emergency Department on Thursday 30 January between 8pm and 10pm.

Measles alert in Central Australia

Health authorities say a person recently diagnosed with measles travelled through Central Australia last week
A person recently diagnosed with measles travelled by car from Darwin to South Australia in the last week, spending time in Central Australia.
Dr Vicki Krause, the Director of the Centre for Disease Control, says they were notified of the case yesterday evening.
"We had a report from South Australia that they diagnosed a person with measles who appears to have acquired it in Darwin," she told 783 Mornings' Nadine Maloney.
Dr Krause says the patient was infectious from about Three Ways onward, and spent time at the Kings Canyon Resort, Ayers Rock Resort, and Alice Springs on his way down to South Australia.

Another person has been diagnosed with measles after flying to Darwin from the Philippines.
The Northern Territory Health Department says it is the 19th confirmed case of the highly contagious disease in the Top End over the past three weeks.
It says the most recent case was infectious while on flight JQ-78 from Manila to Darwin, a late night flight on Friday January 31.
It says anyone on that flight who is not 'measles immune' should be check for the signs and symptoms of measles.
Several other cases of measles have been reported in people who had recently return from south-east Asian countries.
The Northern Territory Centre for Disease Control says the measles outbreak has now spread to Katherine, about 300 kilometres south of Darwin, with two cases reported there...

Senior medical adviser for population health services Mark Veitch yesterday warned Tasmanians and recent visitors to the South of the state to watch out for measles symptoms during the first three weeks of February...

Measles outbreak worsens

A measles outbreak across the Top End is continuing the gather pace, with 26 confirmed cases.
Head of Disease Surveillance at the NT Centre for Disease Control, Peter Markey, said people who thought they had symptoms of the disease should get checked out by a doctor.
"This won't be the end of it, we expect to hear of some more cases over the next few weeks," Dr Markey said.
The number of cases has been steadily rising and has jumped by seven since Friday last week...
