WITH the instance of whooping cough on the rise, parents are being warned to immunise their little ones or face ?100 days of hell?.

Reported cases of whooping cough in the Knox area almost doubled last year compared with 2010.

The Victorian Department of Health has already recorded 15 cases for January this year, and Greater Eastern Health chairwoman Wendy Bissenger is worried the figures will increase...

WA's record-breaking whooping cough epidemic which peaked late last year appears to be continuing in 2012, with notifications remaining high in January...

...Last year, numbers peaked in November, with 637 cases reported compared with the same month in 2010 when there were 168 cases. Of all cases in 2011, 123 were in the most at-risk category - children aged under one - and of them, 45 per cent were hospitalised.

In January this year, 606 cases had been reported, however, these figures could increase as notifications are collated. In WA, the highest rates of infection have been among primary school aged children, even though most have been vaccinated...

A spike in whooping cough cases may have been caused by a new strain of the bacteria that is resistant to existing vaccines, new research suggests.

Last year the number of diagnosed whooping cough cases in Australia rose to 38,000 - the highest since records began in 1991.

A team of Australian scientists studied samples taken from patients in four states and found the new strain of the bacteria now accounts for 84 per cent of whooping cough cases...

Hundreds test positive to whooping cough in Victoria

A NEW strain of whooping cough is striking Victorians, with even recently immunised children falling victim.

Department of Health figures show 1369 people statewide have this year tested positive to the disease, just over a quarter of them children aged under 14.

While the total number of cases is less than half the 3000 recorded during an outbreak at the same time last year, researchers believe a seemingly vaccine-resistant whooping cough strain will cause a surge in children falling ill this winter...

Whooping cough cases in WA have soared to 1500 so far this year - more than three times the number recorded at this time last year.

WA has been in the grips of a whooping cough epidemic since the middle of last year, and the number of cases continue to cause concerns for the health industry.

It comes amid warnings that dangerous new strains of whooping cough bacteria are evading the vaccine and entrenching a four-year epidemic that could spread overseas...

BUNBURY parents have been urged to vaccinate their children against the potentially deadly disease whooping cough with more than 50 cases recorded this year.

Parents and caregivers of the South West Sports Centre cr?che were notified recently when a child at the centre was confirmed to have the potentially infectious illness.

There were 31 whooping cough cases recorded in Bunbury in February, 15 in March and eight so far this month.

In the South West, 111 cases of whooping cough were reported by April 13 ? about double the number reported at the same time last year...

A number of Mornington Peninsula residents have been diagnosed with whooping cough in recent weeks, yet the State Department of Health has seen a decrease in the incidence of the condition across Victoria.

Up to May 22, the peninsula has this year had 72 cases of whooping cough. In Red Hill, there have been 12 cases diagnosed in the past three weeks...

Worst of whooping cough threat is over in the Far North, doctors say

DOCTORS are confident a wave of whooping cough in the Far North has levelled out, with the number of diagnosed cases dropping in the past three months.

The region?s public health clinics were busy with patients affected by the respiratory infection, known as pertussis, over a six-month period.

One hundred and six cases were recorded in the Cairns and Hinterland Health District in January alone. But just 28 people with the illness were recorded last month.

Queensland Health?s public health physician Dr Richard Gair said the worst of the outbreak in the Far North was over.

"It?s come down to the levels we were getting last year," he said.

Dr Gair said cases in the region began soaring late last year. Between the start of September and the end of December, 530 of the year?s 723 cases were recorded. The spike was the result of a national wave of whooping cough, Dr Gair said...

Swimming Australia has cancelled a swim meet and Olympic relay team camp scheduled for this weekend after an outbreak of whooping cough at the AIS.

An outbreak of whooping cough at the Australian Institute of Sport has forced the cancellation of a grand prix swimming event scheduled for this weekend.

The 2012 Swimming Australia Grand Prix was due to be held at the AIS in Canberra on Friday and Saturday, along with an Australian swimming relay team camp.

Swimming Australia released a statement on Wednesday saying it had cancelled the event and the camp as a precautionary measure after an outbreak of whooping cough at the academy.

It is understood that two members of the Australian women's water polo team and a coach have contracted whooping cough, prompting the decision...

Hunter New England Health says incidents of whooping cough are down this year, but the number is still a concern.

There have been 421 confirmed cases of the disease so far this year, 130 down on last year...
