LOCALS need to be on the look out for measles, after a child was recently admitted to Mt Druitt Hospital.

NSW Health sent out the warning and communicable diseases manager Vicky Sheppeard said they were not able to determine the source of the infection as yet...

...The public health unit has been working with the hospital to identify and contact people who may have been in the emergency department on Monday, January 31 or in the Children?s Ward on February 1.

Other places people may have been exposed to measles were at the Hogs Breath Cafe in St Marys on Friday, January 28 and the Rooty Hill Medical Centre on Sunday, January 30....

Measles outbreak sparks vaccination warning from health authorities

A RESURGENCE of measles in Victoria has prompted health authorities to warn the public to ensure they are vaccinated against the highly infectious disease.

There have been 15 cases of measles reported in the first six weeks of the year.

More than half of these cases are caught the disease overseas.

Victoria?s Chief Health Officer Dr John Carnie said eight people were diagnosed with the disease when they returned to Australia.

"Most of the additional seven cases are people who may have had contact with the returned travellers," Dr Carnie said.

There are fears more people have been infected.

Six people, aged between 8 months and 66, had to be hospitalised after contracting measles...

Queensland health authorities are concerned a teenage boy who became infected with measles might have spread it at two Gold Coast tourist spots.

The boy is the latest Queenslander to contract the highly infectious virus. It's believed he caught it interstate.

"Anyone who was at White Water World on Tuesday or Coolangatta Airport on Sunday afternoon who develops measles-like symptoms in the next week or two should contact their GP for advice," Gold Coast Public Health Medical Officer Dr Don Staines said in a statement...

Channel 10 News reported this evening that a worker at the Westfield Helensvale shopping centre has been confirmed as suffering from measles...



Anyone who shopped at the centre today should be alert for the symptoms of measles...

NSW Health is urging people born during or after 1966 to ensure they are fully immunised against measles.

People who are planning overseas travel should make sure they have received two doses of the free Measles Mumps Rubella (MMR) vaccine at least one month apart from their GP or at a travel health clinic.

NSW Health has been notified of 29 cases of measles in NSW In the past four weeks.

Seven of these cases were directly linked with unvaccinated or partially vaccinated travellers returning from overseas.

Public health units have identified that eleven cases have links to previously notified cases, however, the source of infection for the remaining eleven cases remains unknown...

Unvaccinated travellers spreading measles outbreak

AN outbreak of measles is being spread by unvaccinated travellers who bring the deadly disease home with them.

Western Sydney and Wollongong are hot spots with 45 cases already reported this year - more than the total number of cases reported each year since 2007.

Pockets of NSW are recording outbreaks, with at least 23 cases reported in Rooty Hill, St Mary's, Mt Druitt and Seven Hills.

Health authorities are worried it is spreading because young adults are not properly vaccinated and are travelling to Europe and other countries where it is still common. The potentially deadly disease has almost been eliminated from Australia, where it is now considered travel-acquired with no "home-grown" cases detected here...

GOLD Coasters are being told to be on alert for measles symptoms, with Queensland Health confirming another case of the disease.

Anyone who was at Australia Fair Shopping Centre or the domestic terminal at Brisbane Airport last Thursday, or Robina Town Centre on Friday, are being told to be extra cautious, after a person who visited those sites was confirmed with measles and was infectious at the time.

It is believed the person had no obvious link to two other cases on the Gold Coast earlier this month, and had probably contracted the disease while overseas in Thailand...

Victoria's Health Department has issued a measles alert after four people were infected on a flight from Malaysia to Melbourne.

The department believes more people may have been infected and is trying to track down all passengers from the Air Asia flight on April 1...

A measles alert has been issued in Victoria after four passengers who arrived in Melbourne on an Air Asia flight from Malaysia this month were detected with the disease.

The flight arrived from Kuala Lumpur in Melbourne on the morning of April 1.

One case was identified at the Austin Hospital on April 14.

As a precaution, patients who attended the Austin's emergency department between 9am and 7.30pm (AEST) on Thursday are being contacted by hospital staff...

TANNUM Sands Surf Life Saving Club members who travelled to the Gold Coast recently to compete have been put on alert for measles.

Queensland Health is urging anyone who was at Q1 on the Gold Coast on April 8, or who attended the surf lifesaving carnival on Kurrawa Beach or the McDonalds restaurant in Marine Parade, Labrador, on April 9 to be on the alert for symptoms of measles.

TASMANIAN HEALTH ALERT ISSUED OVER MEASLES CASE

People who travelled overnight on the Spirit of Tasmania from Melbourne to Devonport on 11-12 April are being urged to be alert for signs of measles after a woman on the crossing was diagnosed with the highly infectious disease.
Deputy Director of Public Health, Dr Chrissie Pickin, said people who visited the North West Regional Hospital at Burnie on 12, 14 and 15 April should also be on the look out for symptoms
because the 26-year old woman visited the hospital?s emergency department on those days...

...The 26-year old woman ? who is currently in a stable condition ? is understood to have been on an Air Asia flight from Kuala Lumpar that arrived into Melbourne at 9.00am on 1 April 201.

A number of passengers on that flight have been diagnosed with measles and the Department of Health in Victoria has also issued a health alert and are following up passengers on the flight.

The woman who travelled to Devonport on the Spirit of Tasmania became ill during the crossing and mixed with other passengers for the early part of the trip.

Passengers who travelled on the 11-12 April crossing are being alerted to the situation and provided with contacts and information.

Dr Pickin said those most at risk from measles were people born after 1966 who had not had two doses of MMR vaccine as well as babies under 12 months old because they were too young to have been vaccinated....

Perth parents are being warned to watch for signs of measles in their children because of fears four infected people may have spread the highly contagious disease at several locations, including two hospital emergency departments.

The WA Health Department confirmed late today that a large number of people had potentially been exposed to the viral illness, including people attending emergency departments at Princess Margaret and Joondalup hospitals.

There was also a risk the infection had spread at several GP surgeries in the northern suburbs where the patients were seen, and at schools and clubs they attended.

The known cases are an adult who returned from the Philippines with the disease, and an unvaccinated chid who was infected in Thailand and then passed the infection on to his two younger unvaccinated siblings...

More than a dozen children have been excluded from two northern suburbs primary schools because they have been exposed to measles.

The Health Department warned on Friday there was a risk of a measles outbreak after four cases were identified this month.

Health Department spokesman Gary Dowse said the families of about 12 children not vaccinated against measles had been told to keep them home for up to two weeks.

About another six children who had had only one dose of vaccine would be permitted to return when they had been given a second dose.

He would not name the two schools involved but said they were in the north-eastern corridor.

?We do take measles seriously because we had eliminated it from WA,? he said. ?When we get these introductions from overseas we have to work hard to stop it spreading further...?

South Australian health authorities have issued a public alert after a man returned from overseas infected with measles.

Chief medical officer Paddy Phillips said the man was infectious when he travelled from Dubai through Melbourne to Adelaide earlier this month.

He was a passenger on the Emirates flight EK 406 from Dubai which arrived in Melbourne on July 8.

He then travelled on a Virgin flight DJ 213 which left Melbourne for Adelaide the same day.

'We are advising anyone who was either on these flights or in the Adelaide or Melbourne airports on the morning of Friday July 8 to be alert for any symptoms of measles over the next two weeks and if they are ill to see their doctor,' Professor Phillips said...
