ATHENS, Mich. (WOOD) - Athens Area Schools were closed Tuesday and will remain closed Wednesday after a large number of students fell ill.
A lot of elementary school students called in sick Monday, according to district Superintendent Richard Franklin. Monday morning, 22% of students were absent due to illness. By 2:30 p.m. Monday, that percentage had risen to 31% in the elementary.
The numbers of illness were not as high in the Athens middle and high school building, but since elementary students have brothers and sisters to whom the illness could spread, the district decided to shut down all school buildings through Wednesday.
