We have something wrong in that article. FMD does not affect humans. There is no human FMD vaccine.

Re: Aswan - High Dam Port

I saw that also Alert. Anyone out there that can help us with the original article? :)

I don't think that's a translation error. I think the reporter didn't know what he was saying. I'm beginning to have SERIOUS doubts about the quality of some of these Egyptian sources. A lot of what they are reporting might be simply false.

Re: Aswan - High Dam Port

Either way, Alert, this is the News forum. And I'll continue to post my findings.

Good. I wish someone who was in Egypt could comment on the overall value of some of these sources. It is inconceivable to me that any respected source in my area (TV station, newspaper, etc.) could post some of these articles and not do a follow-up on them, or do some double-checking of sources.

I could imagine what some foreign language equivalent of FT would look like if they were reading the National Enquirer (tabloid in US), translating it into their language, and reporting it as fact. I wonder if Bat Boy would get his own thread. :-P

We want to know what they are reporting. It is part of the story.

There is the discussion forum for your non-news comments.

Thanks.

And that is why the Egyptian newshounds are so valuable here at FT. I have been trying to follow Egyptian sources since that hemorrhagic report out of Alexandria, but between the bad translations and the questionable sources, I really cannot.

My prayers are with those who do follow those sources. There may be something serious there.

BEIJING, Sept. 23 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- Sinovac Biotech Ltd. (Amex: SVA), a leading developer and provider of vaccines in China, today announced it has initiated development of a vaccine human enterovirus 71, EV 71, which causes hand, foot, and mouth disease (or HFMD). In collaboration with China the CDC, Sinovac will be supplied with epidemiology study results from the outbreak area, which will facilitate the Company’s vaccine research and development initiatives.

Mr. Weidong Yin, President and CEO, commented, “Outbreaks of HFMD have occurred in many countries since the 1970s. The disease has increasingly become a threat not only in China, but also in neighboring countries. Since no vaccine is currently available to protect our children, we believe that, as a leading vaccine developer in China, it is our responsibility to engage in the development of a vaccine against EV71. We anticipate that this product has the potential to become another flagship product once it is developed and commercialized similar to Healive.”

About EV71

Enterovirus 71, or EV71, causes Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (or HFMD) among children. HFMD is a common and usually mild childhood disease. EV71 is a frequent cause of HFMD epidemics associated with neurological disease in a small proportion of cases. There have been a number of outbreaks of EV71 HFMD in the Asia-Pacific region since 1997. Outbreaks have been reported in Malaysia (1997), Taiwan (1998, 2000 & 2001), China (1998-2008), Australia (1999) and Singapore (2000) among other areas in the region. There is no specific treatment for enterovirus infections and a vaccine is not currently available.

In 2007, total reported cases were 83,344, among which 17 are dead. According to WHO report dated 7 May 2008, as of 5 May, 4,496 cases, including 22 deaths, of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) due to enterovirus 71 (EV71) have been reported among infants and young children in Fuyang City, Anhui Province, China, since the beginning of the year.

Re: Aswan - High Dam Port

HAND, foot and mouth, is not the same disease as foot and mouth.

Hand, foot and mouth is caused by several different agents including the EV71 mentioned above and affects little kids; foot and mouth affects only animals.

Re: Aswan - High Dam Port

the translation is actually pretty good and the word in Arabic does mean passenger just like its used.

the thing in alex is troublesome, with no further comments. i suspect its a black list topic.

Either that or it isn't true. It was edited after release, and the source was a man who said his son was ill, not any of the doctors. Three fatal cases of undiagnosed disease in one hospital would drew serious attention. Look at what happened last October in Johannesburg.
