A wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) isolate has been confirmed from an environmental sample taken in Aswan, Egypt, in December 2010. This isolate is related to WPV1 detected in 2009 in Sudan. An investigation is ongoing to more clearly identify surveillance gaps in the region. Two rounds of SIAs were carried out in both northern and southern Sudan in late February and late March/early April. Planning for further SIAs in May is currently underway
