GUWAHATI: Assam is set to become the first state in the country to start vaccination against Japanese Encephalitis among adults, state health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday.

The outbreak of Japanese Encephalitis in this northeastern state is an annual problem, This year, the disease has already claimed 159 lives across Assam.

Adult vaccination for JE starts in Assam

Assam today started adult vaccination programme for Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in Sivsagar district, becoming the first state to undertake adult vaccination in the country.

The vaccination programme will continue till October 30. The adult vaccination programme will be extended to other high JE prone districts depending on its success in Sivsagar district. The state health department will incur all expenses and over Rs 72 crore will be spent towards operational costs alone. About five lakh (500,000) people are expected to be covered under the programme and a routine health check-up of blood pressure and blood sugar will be done on all people before the JE vaccine dose is administered.
