9 students got infected with novel flu in a high school in the center of Tokyo. (1.5km from my office) The transmission route is unknown.

About thirty cases are confirmed in various places of Japan for three days in a row. It suggests infections are steadily spreading in Japan again.

Infections started in two universities.

20090616travel.GIF

Traveler’s cases increased by 19 cases today, 11 of which are travelers from Hawaii, USA. The earthy paradice may have become a place of infections.
Having worked in a Four Seasons resort there for two years, I feel very sorry about Hawaii.

Another worry is that a lady in my section is going to a vacation trip there from tomorrow night. I may spoil her enthusiasm if I warn her tomorrow morning. Anyway, I will have to say something nicely.

While Philippines report only 77 confirmed cases, increasing number of traveler’s cases from there suggests the infection is spreading more than the face value.

20090616age.GIF

As school infections in Fukuoka and Chiba are decreasing, the percentage of age groups 0-19 is declining from 68-69% to 64% today.

Re: Aso calls for calm response as new flu infections reach 676 in Japan

I haven't seen such detailed lists in other countries.
Apparantly Japan is hoping to isolate

Still the sequence-names are not included in the list :-(

.---------------------------------------

Japan has its own, characteristic viruses, not seen elsewhere.
(except Narita/1 (airport))

They have the 3 markers from Korea/1 , but then 6 other individual markers.
12 complete genomes meanwhile with these markers.

The Korea-markers are part of the 5 Mexico-City markers which are part of the 11 Cancun-markers.

So before the Mexico-City-strain emerged, the Korea/1+Japan
strains split from it.

So, this virus has presumably evolved in a niche since Feb.Mar.
(boarding home , swine farm , ...)
before openly infecting all these students in Japan

Now we have another virus A/Shiga/1 which has all the 5 Mexico-City
markers and clearly shows a 2nd introduction

Update of Novel Flu in Japan
June 24, 2009

From this week,
NHK, national TV station, has stopped daily update of confirmed cases in Japan on a prefectural basis.
Other media has also reduced news coverage of novel flu cases.
The Ministry of Health Labor and Welfare has stopped Onset Dates data.

These changes reflect not only people's interest in novel flu has gone down but also government's policy of scaling down countermeasures for novel flu which I found really necessary and rather too late. But I didn't expect release of information and media coverage would also be scaled down. I am considering how to cope with the situation and in the meantime will update the confirmed cases chart.

Gs, what do you mean when you say it shows a "2nd introduction"?

sorry, I missed that. Th thread is so full and no feature
to list responses at v-bulletin.

In theory the virus could have been imported by one person (swine, fomite,
airplane,...) into Japan and then everything in Japan had spread from that one
introduction.
(discarding the Narita airport quarantine viruses)

this was still possible until I saw the Shiga-sequences,
which must have another origin, must have entered Japan independently.

Nagasaki, Fukushima and Ibaraki prefectures announced 4 new confirmed cases of novel flu infection Thursday, bringing total number of novel flu cases (including those detected in Narita and Kansai Airports) to 1003 in 38 prefectures as at 11 am June 25.

According to the Ministry of Health Labor and Welfare, no severe case has been reported since the first case was detected by the quarantine inspection at Narita Airport on May 9. Based on WHO?s report, Japan is the 8th country in the world to have more than 1000 novel flu cases.

Re: Aso calls for calm response as new flu infections reach 1003 in Japan

Are there informations about hospitalized patients / critical care patients?

No. Basically all the patients until the government eased the measures on June 19 were hospitalized according to the Infectious Disease Prevention act regardless how mild symptoms are.
After the measures are eased, many patients stay home. Reasons for the remaining few patients in hospitals are not reported.
The Ministry of Health is repeating that no severe case is reported by municipalities.
I haven't seen any news about underlying health conditions, complications, ventilators or ICU so far.

Update of Novel Flu in Japan
June 25, 2009

Latest press release by the Ministy of Health Labor and Welfare as of 17:30 June 25 stands at 1012 for confirmed cases reported by prefectures and municipalities. Including 11 cases detected at Narita and Kansai Airports, the latest total number of confirmed cases in Japan stands at 1023.

The following chart and graphs are as of 11:00am June 25, 2009.

Please note: Pie charts until June 18 showed age distributions of
confirmed cases only after May 31. Pie charts since June 23 shows
all domestic cases since May 16.

Since the media stopped daily reports of new cases last weekend, this update largely depends upon information from the government. Thus, I’m worried if the source information will be updated on a timely basis during this weekend.
