ASHLAND ? The FIVCO region has had two confirmed influenza deaths this winter, a health official said Friday.

However, the key word in that sentence is ?confirmed.? Kristy Bolen, senior regional epidemiologist with the Boyd County Health Department, said it was likely there had been additional flu deaths that weren?t detected.

Flu deaths can only be confirmed by testing cultures taken from the deceased, she said. Oftentimes, she said, those post-mortem cultures do not get taken, particularly when the deceased are older.

?There probably have been more (flu deaths),? Bolen said.
