Ramallah ? Ma?an ? The Palestinian Ministries of Health and Education have formed a joint task force to prevent the spread of of H1N1 flu as the new school year begins in the West Bank.
This announcement came during a press conference on Tuesday with the Minister of Education, Lamis Al-Alami, the Minister of Health, Fath Abu Moghli, along with other officials who spoke about arrangements both ministries are making to combat the virus commonly known as swine flu.
Al-Alami said that all schools have been ordered to provide health materials, distribute educational leaflets about the disease, and make sure that rest rooms are sanitized
The minister also asked schools to rearrange pupils? desks inside the classrooms and to put students farther from one another. Schools were also told to talk about the H1N1 during the first class of the first day.
Health Minister Abu Moghli said, ?We have taken all necessary measures in the previous stage to face the threat of swine flu, which earned us the praise of the World Health Organization for controlling the disease. We declared only 128 patients [with H1N1] which is less than in neighboring countries.?
He also reiterated that the Palestinian Authority has allocated eight million US dollars for H1N1 vaccinations. Priority for the injections will be given to the students and groups who are most vulnerable to the disease, he said. He added that the prevention plan will include the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip.
Ministry of Health Official Muhammad Ar-Ramlawi said that any student found to have the symptoms of H1N1 will be sent home, and will be allowed to return to classes in 24 hours if the symptoms disappear.
Tuesday was the first day of school in the West Bank, following their peers in the Gaza Strip by a week. According to official figures, a total of 1.1 milion students are now back in schools in both the West Bank and Gaza. There are 652,000 students are in the West Bank and about 500,000 in Gaza.
The Palestinian Authority?s 1,906 schools have 798,000 students, while 309 UNRWA schools have 274,000 students, and 288 private schools have nearly 80,000 students.
