About 120 of those patients had influenza-like symptoms and about 90 were suspected cases of swine flu. The vast majority of the cases were mild.
The children?s hospital has seen the number of patients visiting the emergency department gradually pick up during the past three weeks. Normally at this time of year, the hospital would expect about 110 patients total.
?I will tell you that this is not completely unexpected by any means,? said Dr. John Loiselle, director of emergency medicine at duPont Hospital. ?We?ve been spending a lot of time over summer planning for this type of event and we had an idea it would happen. We were prepared as we could be for the volume to get higher.?
