As COVID outbreak intensifies, Israel said mulling ‘herd immunity’ policy
Almost 3,000 new cases seen for 2nd straight day, but serious cases stay same; milder, fast-spreading Omicron reportedly prompts Health Ministry to weigh aiming for mass infections

Israel recorded almost 3,000 new coronavirus cases for the second day in a row, according to data released Wednesday, as the infection rate continued to climb and senior Health Ministry officials were reportedly weighing a switch to a policy of reaching herd immunity through mass infection.

Ministry data published Wednesday morning showed 2,967 infections were confirmed on Tuesday, a similar number to the previous day, which had been a three-month high.

The ministry said 2.48 percent of all tests came back positive on Tuesday, a new high for the current wave driven by the highly infectious Omicron variant...

This sounds like Great Barrington Declaration strategy. This could be a good time to pull that off with Omicron, but since this was an "unsourced report" I think there is fear of attacks from powerful opponents of such a strategy in Israel, as happened in the US.

Maybe they are moving to using Omicron for mass immunity, at least for younger citizens. This teacher is very worried, though.

...With hours-long line ups at testing sites, and with people suddenly becoming carriers of Omicron en masse everywhere, we are living in unprecedented times. It is as if Omicron is the new common cold. The government has decided that after two years of fighting the pandemic, that the best outcome will be for a large portion of the population to become infected with it. All one needs to do is read the headlines, with many pointing to a “mass infection model.”
...
We may have spent two years going through lockdowns, through mass closures, through Zoom, and draconian limitations. We have become the poster child of Pfizer and the first to mass vaccinate. Suddenly the government has decided with the flood gates open, to let the population largely fend for themselves. Israel may very well become the first country to reach “herd immunity” with all its side effects.

May G-d help us, for many are about to get sick.
