Norovirus forces local school to close

Hellstern Middle School in Springdale was closed on Friday after more than 300 students called in sick or left early on Thursday. Samples that were sent to the Arkansas State Health Department revealed it was norovirus.

Springdale schools spokesperson Rick Schaeffer said. ?I was talking to the secretary Monday, and she said it was nonstop answering the phone in the morning; my son won?t be there or my daughter won?t be there. She said she?d never seen anything like that.?

Norovirus forces local schools to close again

Two school districts are canceling classes because hundreds of kids are sick. Schools in Jay, Okla. will be out Friday because of the flu, and the Lincoln school district in Arkansas has closed for the second time this week because so many kids are sick again with a stomach bug. 40/29 News spoke with an expert who says there's really only one way to kill the bug.

Students in Lincoln will be out of school until Tuesday. The superintendent hopes the four-day weekend gives kids a chance to get better.

Lincoln Superintendent Clay Hendrix told 40/29 that 15 to 20 kids were being sent home every hour on Thursday, forcing schools to close their doors and start the cleaning process all over again.
