Nineteen more flu-related deaths were reported to the state in the past week, bringing the death toll from the current flu season to 159, the state Department of Health reported.

The department also reported that doctor's office and emergency room visits by patients with flu-like symptoms declined last week, providing health officials with hope that the worst of the flu season -- the state's deadliest in at least 17 years -- has passed.

After rising for five straight weeks, the percentage of emergency room visits that were by patients with flu-like symptoms dropped during the week that ended Saturday to 7.6 percent, from 8.8 percent the previous week, according to a Health Department report.

Six flu deaths drive season's toll above 200

With new cases on decline, activity level now ?minimal?
By Andy Davis

This article was published today at 3:16 a.m.

The death toll in Arkansas from the current flu season surpassed 200 as six additional deaths were reported in the past week to the state Department of Health.

Meanwhile, the number of new cases continued to decline, with the department downgrading the level of activity from "moderate" to "minimal."

"We're just thrilled that the flu season seems to be winding down," Jennifer Dillaha, medical director for the Health Department's immunization program, said. "It's been a very difficult year for a lot of people -- families and health care providers."

Because of delays in collecting information, it's likely the number of reported deaths, which stood at 203 as of Tuesday, will continue rising even as new flu cases continue to become less common, she said.

Five more flu-related deaths were reported to the state last week, bringing the death toll from the current flu season to 210, state health officials told legislators on Monday.

Meanwhile, the number of people getting sick with the flu has continued to decline.

"We're seeing a clear downtrend" in new infections, Nate Smith, director of the state Department of Health, told the House and Senate public health committees.

"Although there will continue to be influenza activity at some level in the state, probably for several weeks, we are clearly past the worst of it."

Arkansas flu deaths climb to 215

Illness cited in 30 counties, but season?s end called close
By Andy Davis

This article was published today at 3:34 a.m.

Five more flu deaths were reported to the state in the past week, raising the death toll from the current flu season to 215, the state Department of Health reported Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the department reported fewer than 1 percent of patients visiting the doctor had flu-like symptoms -- about the same percentage that's typically reported outside of the flu season, said Jennifer Dillaha, medical director for the Health Department's immunization program.

"There's enough counties reporting activity that we don't feel like we're out of flu season yet, but we're getting very close," she said.
