Third case of avian flu confirmed in Arkansas

After a backyard poultry flock in Arkansas County took ill, the Arkansas Department of Agriculture confirmed the fallen chickens had indeed suffered from avian influenza, the third outbreak confirmed in the state this year.

“The virus can be spread in various ways from flock to flock,” the agriculture department said in a press release, “including by wild birds, through contact with infected poultry, by equipment, and on the clothing and shoes of caretakers.”

The department assured Arkansans that there is no public health concern, and that avian influenza does not affect poultry meat or egg products, which remain safe to eat..
