Flu cases increasing across the Ozarks

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - Counties in the Ozarks are feeling this flu season.
The Texas County Health Department has seen over a 150% increase in flu cases over the last two weeks; nearly a quarter of those cases are kids.
“My staff has said we have seen higher numbers of the flu and flu-like symptoms,” said ER director for Texas County Memorial Hospital, Chantel Garrison. “I do know we have at least six or seven, even in there now, that are flu-like symptoms that we are testing for the flu. "..

Over 100 flu-related deaths reported in Arkansas
Arkansas is reporting over 17,800 positive flu tests and 101 flu-related deaths so far this season.

ARKANSAS, USA — In the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) weekly flu report released Wednesday, Dec. 28, 15 new deaths were confirmed related to the flu in the past week, bringing the total to over 100.

The total has now risen to 101 people in Arkansas who have died from flu-related symptoms since the beginning of October. This number includes one child, but their exact ages have not been made public.

According to the ADH, the following age groups account for the number of flu-related deaths so far this season:

5-17 years old: 1
25-44 years old: 8
45-64 years old: 26
65+ years old: 66

The ADH is reporting that 77% of those who have died were not vaccinated against the flu...

Shortage of flu medication hits Arkansas pharmacies

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) — Nationally, the proportion of deaths reported to the National Center for Health Statistics attributed to pneumonia and the flu is above the epidemic threshold this week.

Arkansas is among the hardest hit states in the country, and the problem is made worse by a shortage of flu medication.

Kavanaugh Pharmacy in Little Rock is pulling through this year's flu season, the worst in years, according to the CDC and state agencies.

Despite supply issues, the pharmacy still offers flu medication that is increasingly hard to come by.

"We've seen the flu just drastically increase in the last few weeks, Anne Pace, pharmacist at Kavanaugh Pharmacy, said. "It's been much harder to get certain antibiotics, as well as Tamiflu, which is the main drug that we use to treat the flu in patients. And so, the regular tablets that people take as well as the suspension has been very difficult--and that's what kids use if they have the flu."
