State confirms six human cases of West Nile virus in East Valley

The first confirmed human cases of West Nile virus this year are all located in the East Valley, the state Department of Health Services announced Friday.

The six cases are from Maricopa and Pinal counties.

"Unfortunately, most of these cases have the more severe form of West Nile virus which is meningitis and/or encephalitis," said Craig Levy, ADHS Vector Control Program Manager. "Because most people with milder symptoms of West Nile stay at home and don't seek medical care, we rarely hear of these cases. That means there are a lot more people sick with West Nile than we know of."

Maricopa County woman confirmed as first West Nile virus death of year

An elderly Maricopa County woman has died from West Nile virus, Maricopa County Public Health said Wednesday, becoming the first confirmed death in the state this year from the disease.

The woman was one of five cases in the county - all in the East Valley - reported last week.

The Maricopa County woman had pre-existing health conditions. Her city of residence was not identified.

Pinal: 1 case of West Nile in county this season

Pinal County has had one reported case of West Nile virus this season to date, but state health officials say there could be many more unreported cases.

The case involved an 18-year-old female who resides in the Queen Creek and San Tan Valley area, said county spokeswoman Heather Murphy. The woman required hospitalization and has since been released.
The latest state statistics as of July 14 include 11 human cases, as well as more than 109 positive mosquito pools in Pinal, Maricopa and Yuma Counties. These figures are the latest available from the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) as of July 19.

West Nile claims second EV victim as mosquito problem hits area hard

An older East Valley man died earlier this month after contracting the West Nile virus, the Maricopa County Department of Public Health confirmed this week.

The death marks the second West Nile-related death this year and the second East Valley victim. An elderly Gilbert woman died in June.

As of Thursday, the county has confirmed 22 human cases of the disease. It is passed from infected bird to mosquito to humans.

Pima County Health Department Confirms First Human Case of West Nile Virus (posted 9/24/10)
The Pima County Health Department has received confirmation that a resident has tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV) and is waiting for lab confirmation on a second probable human case. In addition to the human case, WNV has been confirmed in a horse, an exotic bird, a sentinel chicken and in two mosquito pools.

Safford resident dies of West Nile virus

A Safford resident has died from West Nile virus, the Graham County Health Department reported Monday.

?The 63-year-old resident had other medical conditions that may have been contributing factors; however, West Nile virus was the ultimate cause of death,? Health Department Director Neil Karnes said in a prepared statement.
