This year's flu season is nothing to sneeze at according to Arizona health officials.

The Arizona Department of Health Service reported Friday the number of influenza cases so far in 2019 is more than three times as many as previous seasons.

There have been 950 flu cases so far this season compared to 290 cases during the same time period in 2018. Every county in the state has reported influenza cases.

Baby too young to be immunized dies from flu in Maricopa County

An infant too young to be immunized has died from the flu, Maricopa County health officials confirmed Tuesday.

The baby's death is the first pediatric flu death of the season and a reminder that it's important for Arizonans to get a flu shot, not just for yourself, but as a way of protecting more vulnerable people, public health experts say.

“This incredibly sad case reminds us that even though the flu is common, it can cause serious illness and even death,” Dr. Rebecca Sunenshine, medical director for disease control at Maricopa County Department of Public Health, said in a news release.
