Arizona identified the first locally-acquired influenza case of the 2013-2014 season during week 40, a child infected with influenza B as confirmed by PCR at the Arizona State Public Health Laboratory. Influenza activity otherwise continued to be low. Arizona reported Sporadic activity for week 43.

Influenza activity highlights:
? Since the identification of the first locally-acquired influenza case of the 2013-2014 season during week 40, 46 cases have been laboratory confirmed, from nine counties; 20 of these were in the past week, from seven counties.
? 24 (52%) reports this season are influenza A, 19 (41%) are influenza B, and 3 (7%) are of unknown type.
? One (5%) of 19 specimens tested positive for influenza at ASPHL, an influenza A (H1N1) pdm09 virus.

Influenza-associated Pediatric Deaths
Influenza-associated pediatric deaths are reportable to the public health departments in Arizona. The 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 seasons showed an increase in influenza-associated deaths in children related to the circulation of the 2009 H1N1 strain. One to five deaths were reported in each of the other seasons since 2004. No influenza-associated pediatric deaths have been reported for the 2013-2014 season.
