Re: Arizona 2012-13 Season: Weeks 44-4 (Another Pediatric Death; Total Two)
Week 4: Widespread
2 pediatric deaths; total 2 (both in week 4. A Yavapai County child with underlying medical conditions had an influenza A (H3) and RSV coinfection, confirmed by PCR. The most recent case was a Navajo County child with influenza A confirmed by rapid influenza diagnostic testing.)
• The numbers in this report are based on processed cases. There are a large number of reports that are still being processed. This means the numbers in this report are provisional.
• 1,583 laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza were reported in the past week, from 13 counties. 6,422 cases have been reported this season, with laboratory-confirmed cases identified in all 15 counties.
• 65% of reports this season are influenza A; 20% are influenza B and 15% are of unknown type. Influenza A (H3), A (H1N1) pdm09, and B have been identified by PCR or culture this season.
• Influenza-like illness activity at sentinel providers (4.7%) was above Arizona’s threshold in week 3. Influenza-like illness at sentinel schools has slightly decreased since last week but is still elevated.
P&I deaths within historical limits.
• From the death certificate database, 32 new pneumonia and influenza (P&I) deaths were identified during the previous week and 209 P&I deaths have been identified for the 2012-2013 influenza season; 202 P&I deaths occurred in this period in the 2011-2012 season.
