A fatal case of Areco hospital
It was an intensive care nurse. He had traveled to the United States, where he could have been infected by a variety of influenza A prevalent there. Another woman is in serious condition. Since patients were identified, there were no new cases.

By Peter Lipcovich

He died yesterday of women affected by a virus in Carmen de Areco. She was a nurse working in the intensive care unit of the hospital in that locality. Another patient is "in serious condition" in intensive care in La Plata, while nine others were discharged. All were linked-as workers, patients or relatives of patients-service hospital with that of Carmen de Areco. The woman who died yesterday had traveled to the United States: there may have been infected with a variety of flu prevalent in the Northern Hemisphere and, on returning, could have been the "index case" from which others were infected. Anyway, the influenza virus was isolated in only four of the patients, studies continue to detect other germs. A specialist explained to this newspaper that "when a patient dies after falling ill with flu, not for this virus, but by simple, often common germs are fatal causes like diabetes, advanced age or smoking." In any case, since, for more than ten days, the patients were found and measures were taken to prevent the spread of the virus, no new cases.

The deceased patient named Andrea Gordillo and was 39 years old. Since 28 January, was hospitalized in intensive care at the Hospital of La Plata Rossi. According to sources close to the area of health, women "had smoking history." The Ministry of Health of Buenos Aires stated that "the other nurse (intensive care service at the hospital in Carmen de Areco) Rossi admitted to the delicate remains in intensive care, with mechanical ventilation. Other Carmen de Areco patients who required hospitalization for having contracted a respiratory virus were discharged. "

Luis Crovetto, director of primary care at the Ministry of Health of Buenos Aires, this newspaper warned that "it concludes epidemiological research and infectious diseases specialist, will issue no judgment about which germ caused the infection." Samples of infected patients are investigated in Malbr?n Institute-Ministry of Health of the Nation, and "the results will be interpreted by the committee that convened epidemiologists and infectious disease." On the assumption that the deceased patient was infected in the United States, where he had traveled little before, "is a very important, but the commission has not been issued yet," said Crovetto.

Jaime Lazovsky-Undersecretary of Foreign Health and Research, Ministry of Health of the Nation-explained to this newspaper that "the swine flu virus was detected in only four of the patients." In fact, the first analyzes were negative and the virus could be detected only by a very special and sensitive technique called "conventional PCR influenza A generic". There were meetings of experts to try to explain the fact that the virus has not been detected with the most common, but still no conclusion. Moreover, the technique only requires that the virus is influenza A, but not of what variety it is, which would determine whether a variety is prevalent in the U.S. this season. Meanwhile, "investigates the possibility of antibodies against other viruses, bacteria or fungi-Lazovsky-added: the measurements were made last week but should be repeated two to four weeks."

Alcides Troncoso professor at the Department of Infectious Diseases, Faculty of Medicine in the academic unit UBA hospital-Mu?iz, P?gina/12 consulted, said that "in all cases of flu deaths calls, actually the death complication is bacterial. Thus, mortality from influenza A (H1N1) was very high in the pandemic of 1918, when there were no antibiotics and mechanical ventilators. After pandemics were caused by other strains of the virus: the A (H2N2) or A (H3N2). The 2009 pandemic was again virus A (H1N1) but with much lower mortality than in 1918. "

The infectious noted that, "generally, patients who die in relation to the flu virus had some pre-existing risk factors: heart disease, diabetes, obesity, smoking status, pregnancy, age over 50 years. The seriousness of the case usually depends on the 'ground', the previous state, and of course the person has been vaccinated against the flu or not. Most commonly, these patients have been superinfected with a common germ, often a bacterium, the previous state even makes appropriate antibiotics for bacteria that do not reach. "

Troncoso said that "in cases of Carmen de Areco, assuming that they originated in a person who traveled to the United States, it is often noted that to happen. And, by the information available, all patients have been in contact with one infected person: no epidemic, not even 'microepidemic', which requires multiple sources of infection. Anyway, it is best not get the flu, since one does not know which side of the statistic will be: mild or serious complication. The flu is easily spread by inhalation or by putting your hand to your face after touching objects contaminated with the virus: it is preferable that the risk groups are vaccinated, and not forgetting precautions like frequent hand washing: Clean hands save life. "

The first fatal case was recorded in summer. Andrea Gordillo (39), head of the hospital's nursing service "Virgen del Carmen", Carmen de Areco, died yesterday afternoon in hospital Rossi de La Plata, where he was hospitalized since Jan. 28 with acute Influenza A.

He remains in intensive care with symptoms compatible with influenza A, Magdalena Beli (48) Mechanically assisted by respiratory failure. The other nine patients affected by this outbreak that began two weeks ago at the hospital de Areco were discharged and are under outpatient control.

According to the doctor, Gordillo died after "suffering a severe hemodynamic failure". Moreover, "had increased their smoking history that level of risk." The woman held in December to visit Miami. It was a vacation trip he shared with friends and some family. "She spent the holidays without drawbacks. He gathered more than 15 people to celebrate the new year, "said a relative of the victim. The hypothesis is that the authorities in that country, where there is an epidemic with over 20,000 cases, spreading Influenza A.

Then, always holding the theory-officials spread the virus among their co-workers in Areco. Therefore, the provincial health minister, Alejandro Collie, insisted that "there is no more virus circulation" because for 14 days reported no new episodes.

However, the relatives of the sick say another version. Speculate that the condition could be derived from a "virus-hospital". "Gordillo traveled to the U.S. with 5 other people-family and friends-and none was infected. Moreover, the incubation period of influenza A is of a week to 10 days and the workers began to have the first symptoms about 20 days after the return of the country Gordillo, "said yesterday a family member of another of the nurses.

The Ministry of Health of Buenos Aires do not close any possibility. "The cause of his hospitalization remains a study in Malbrán Institute, where various research continues bacteriological beyond in some samples have found traces of the swine flu virus," says the medical report released by the agency .

All patients admitted to the respiratory disease who were discharged and returned to Carmen de Areco. "They make normal life, do not use chinstrap" they said in the northern city of the province. However, licensed are working.

The "Virgen del Carmen" was closed yesterday. The medical center has 96 beds and serve 120 people between professionals and paramedics. Annexed operates a nursing home. For more than 10 days is closed as a precautionary measure. Only emergency care and outpatient adult and pediatric patients for having symptoms consistent with influenza. To assist people ministry sent a truck Hospital because in 40 miles around does not work another health care facility in the region.

Although the studies are still Malbrán to detect pathogen affecting nurses from Health recommended to those who begin a journey across America vaccinated against influenza A. Although in our country the vaccine is applied to a different strain circulating in the Northern Hemisphere since the beginning of winter.

In 2009 influenza A in Argentina caused more than half a thousand deaths. In total 10,000 people were affected by the disease, whose proliferation forced to suspend classes in schools and universities, as well as all kinds of public and cultural activities in 17 of the 23 provinces. The pandemic sent the following year and since 2010 there had been only two deaths, both in 2011.

Last night, the health authorities of the Nation and the Province insisted that this time it was an outbreak focused and no virus circulation in the country. So calm was asked to the general population.

And someone has commented on this article:

In Carmen de Areco, we are sure that it is not flu that killed Andrea.Estamos sure she did not contract the virus in Miami. Stop crucify. She is not guilty of anything. It is only guilty of having chosen this profession as honorable. In front of the hospital "Nuestra Señora del Carmen" is the hospital truck trim it does not work. Mild cases are treated in the guard and the rest is derived to a nearby hospital. Needed to clarify this because we are tired of reading and listening everywhere as defenestran.

The translator is messing with us here. It is translating "Gripe A" as "swine flu" , not the correct "Influenza A", furthering the confusion.

This does not add up. Seasonal flu does not kill two ICU nurses.

Swine flu: the last patient died Areco hospitalized in La Plata

It is the nurse Margarita Veliz, the last infected with influenza A was still hospitalized at the Hospital Rossi, of the capital Buenos Aires. He was transferred on Sunday January 27 from the Hospital Nuestra Se?ora del Carmen, Carmen de Areco. He suffered the same symptoms and had the same diagnosis that the patient named Velazquez, also deceased, but whose death occurred on January 21. What is expected to shed light on a problem of this magnitude?

The Hospital Nuestra Se?ora del Carmen and Minister Alexander Collie, Looking to the other side?

SILVER-BUENOS AIRES, Feb. 21 (ANDigital) seems like a never ending story, and conversely those canned-American center, the ending here seems to be always unhappy: Thursday saw the second death among the large number of patients infected with Influenza A Hospital Nuestra Se?ora del Carmen, Carmen de Areco, many of whom were referred to Rossi Hospital of La Plata, and among whom was the deceased, the last to remain in that hospital in the capital Buenos Aires.

According to the findings made exclusively by ANDigital, it is the nurse Margarita Veliz, who performed his duties in that hospital carme?o, and presenting diagnosis was the same as that of the first person who died because of the spread of this strange germ, which is still unknown practically all remember that Vel?zquez-the first death-had been interned affected by a "coronary heart disease", according to the information you have accessed this medium, and whose death certificate mentioned among the causes of it to the initial diagnosis, the condition of a more "unspecified pneumonia," which in Creole means that we do not know what he died of.

Velasquez died on Jan. 21, but was admitted on December 25, 2012. What is particularly strange in that case was that the person who took care of him during that month of hospitalization, his brother, was also hospitalized for this strange seed in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Hospital de La Plata Rossi.

Amen to these specific cases, and as reported ANDigital at all times, according to staff reports La Plata Rossi Hospital and the Union of Health of the Province, there were no fewer than 15 patients affected with this rare germ: of these, 13 were hospital workers, and two community members Carmena, and of these, six were taken to hospital mentioned Plata, who spent time in the pits that Rossi has for isolation of patients in the region.

Among those six was a poor Margarita Veliz, last admitted, who most likely died after being infected with swine flu, but the total lack of responses from a Ministry of Health of the province of Buenos Aires led by Alejandro Collie, and probably his most shameful showing.

Importantly, the Hospital Nuestra Se?ora del Carmen is still virtually closed its community benefits are minimal, its director resigned, Soledad Arias, and is momentarily intervened, and that contagion was reported, and almost absolutely proven, such as inpatient. (ANDigital)

The persistent inability to isolate causative agent of this institutional outbreak of severe respiratory infection is of concern.

One wonder whether after several weeks of media outlets speculations and suggestions, a more authoritative source of information will have to activate to dispel rumors and clarify the nature of this incident.

Speaking to Radio Buenos Aires Province, the official avoided however, speak of Influenza A. In this regard, he said that "we have yet to put a name and surname, infection instrahospitalaria" that ended the lives of two nurses of that hospital. This tempa generated a counterpoint between the national and provincial authorities from the outset of the case, and who was the one who was quick to clarify that they were cases of Influenza A Nation was health, while the family of the victims denied it at all times and the first results had been negative Province.

Died another nurse who had contracted Influenza A
Viernes | 22.02.2013 16:30

He was hospitalized for 20 days in the Hospital Rossi of our city, but was working at the hospital in Carmen de Areco. It is the second case, as the chief of the service died on February 8

The nurse at the hospital in the locality of Carmen de Areco who remained hospitalized in intensive care for 20 days for a box of influenza A Rossi Hospital in our city died last night, bringing the total to two fatalities from the disease.

She served 49 years in the hospital nursing service Virgen del Carmen and was the only one of the 11 patients who remained hospitalized affected, the Ministry of Health of Buenos Aires.

The remaining nine patients were discharged and, according to the government, so far no complications in his health.

Thus, there are two nurses died after infection with influenza A, which affected nine Areco hospital workers and two patients.

The cause of death, like that of his partner who died days ago, still under analysis at the Institute Malbr?n where handled various research bacteriological beyond have found traces in some samples of influenza A virus, noted.

The woman, who was admitted to hospital on 27 January Rossi, died last night following a multi-organ functional failure due to its basic respiratory symptoms, reported from the health portfolio.

They also stated that the other nine people affected did well and were discharged without complications.

The first fatality due to the spread of influenza A was Andrea Gordillo, 39, who died Jan. 8 at a hospital in La Plata, where he was hospitalized since Feb. 28.

Gordillo was serving as head nurse of Areco and was identified by the Health Minister Alexander Collie, as possible "epidemiological link" as it would have contracted the disease during a trip to Orlando, USA.

On Monday, the ministry of Health of Buenos Aires enabled outpatient and some inpatient hospital beds de Areco, which remained closed for prevention after cases were influenza type A.

Instead, the provincial health portfolio decided to keep closed operating rooms and delivery rooms of the Hospital Nuestra Se?ora del Carmen "until all tests are completed epidemiological virus."

As detailed from the portfolio, it is working to reopen the school, once security measures.

Last week, had submitted their resignations executive director, Soledad Arias, and associate director, Laura Gianolio, Hospital de Areco.

The directives were replaced on an interim basis by John Coll, who serves on the provincial health portfolio Hospitals Aires.

Influenza A. Could it be H1N1?

Influenza A. Could it be H1N1?

That is certainly one possibility, and was the initial assumption. It has been pointed out early in this thread that H3N2 was the predominant strain in the US this year, so that could also be involved instead.

But it would be unusual for either virus to produce this outbreak alone. Although 4 samples have come back PCR positive for influenza A, there were at least 7 negatives taken earlier. They have also not announced a subtype, despite being nearly 3 weeks since the positive tests (February 2). And 2 of the 4 positive cases have died. There are also reports in this thread of several respiratory fatalities in this ICU from November to January, well before the nurse who traveled to Florida took ill.

It is conceivable that some kind of bacterial superinfection might also be involved, as was the case in the fatal H3N2 cluster in Maryland last year. It is also possible that the influenza A detections are a red herring or even a false positive, and that some other pathogen is responsible for this outbreak. And there is at least a remote chance that this could be the result of a non-circulating or novel avian or swine influenza A virus.
