Argentina declares public holiday Friday to combat influenza

BUENOS AIRES July 7 (Reuters) - The Argentine government said Tuesday administrative leave on Friday, along with the holiday on Thursday will mean a long weekend with which to prevent the spread of influenza H1N1, which caused the death 60 people in the country.
The government avoided declaring a national holiday but invited to take similar measures to public and private, at a time when the disease affected some 100,000 Argentines, according to Minister of Health, Juan Manzur.
The growth of the disease in Argentina, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared pandemic - the first since 1968 - forced to suspend classes throughout the country, and to declare the fair judicial and cancel hundreds of events.
The authorities advised people to avoid crowded places, while the government and companies licensed to work the risk population, primarily pregnant women, while extending the dissemination of the key measures of personal hygiene.
Fear of contagion, which last week led to the depletion masks and alcohol gel throughout the country, slowed movement common in urban centers, with lower attendance at cinemas and theaters, as well as shopping malls, bars and restaurants.
"It (should) take a long holiday to go (travel), is a little to reconsider (...) is a measure to help stay at home," he told a radio Jorge San Juan, head of intensive care Mu?iz Hospital, specializing in infectious diseases.
The government announced measures this week to coordinate the fight against H1N1 influenza in the country, which already passed a phase of containment to one of mitigation.
Argentina is the third country in the world with the largest number of deaths from the virus, after Mexico and United States, a pandemic that caused 437 deaths and 95,500 cases across the country.
On the streets of Buenos Aires some people use masks, although the Government not recommended in healthy persons.
The fear of the disease even reached the Copa Libertadores de America and that will be played Wednesday in the city of La Plata, 60 kilometers south of Buenos Aires, the first leg of the final between Students and Cruzeiro, Brazilian team repairs made to travel to the country.
Recognized losses in tourist bookings for the holiday period of the austral winter, while trips of high school graduates were rescheduled.
