Argentina’s health authorities detected 40,137 cases of dengue in the first seven epidemiological weeks of 2024 — 2,546% more than during the same period of 2023.

The spike in cases of the mosquito-borne disease reflects the peak season starting sooner, but epidemiologists also warned they had detected cases throughout the year, including in winter, when the disease usually subsides.

The Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO) issued an epidemiological alert on February 16 warning of skyrocketing case counts regionally.

“Considering the number of dengue cases reported in the first weeks of 2024, with an exponential increase in several countries of the Americas, following a year in which the highest number of dengue cases reported in recent decades was recorded in the Americas, the PAHO reiterates to Member States the importance of intensifying efforts and actions to control the Aedes aegypti mosquito (the main vector of transmission), in addition to continuing with surveillance, early diagnosis, and the timely treatment of dengue cases,” ...

Cases of dengue soar in Argentina

Argentina's medical facilities have been reporting an increasing number of patients with dengue-fever-like symptoms over the past few days as authorities say that over 120,000 positive cases and 79 deaths have been confirmed in the last eight months. Nevertheless, the government of President Javier Milei will not follow up on Brazil's model and no action will be taken for the State to afford a mandatory and free-of-charge vaccination campaign.

Due to the increasing number of cases, medical facilities are no longer carrying lab tests and every patient seemingly infected with the virus is treated as a positive case, according to local media.

In Córdoba, where 9,316 cases and seven fatalities have already been confirmed so far in 2024, authorities announced that emergency rooms “do not treat on a first-come, first-served basis, but rather a first observation of the symptoms is carried out to evaluate more serious patients.”

In the province of Salta, the provincial Health Ministry canceled all non-urgent surgeries to make room for dengue patients. In Santa Fe, almost 17,000 cases had been confirmed by March 14, over 10,000 of them in violence-torn Rosario.​..

In the 2023/2024 season, Argentina has already diagnosed over 151,300 cases of dengue fever. Since then, the death toll has risen to 106. Just in the last week, more than 23,700 new infections have been reported, as informed by the newspaper "Pagina 12".

"Compared to other epidemic years, the current season is characterized by a larger scale, starting earlier, and maintaining the number of cases throughout all weeks up to now," reads a statement from the Argentine Ministry of Health.

The newspaper also highlights that the current season is exceptional due to the extent of the epidemic. Local infections are detected in 19 out of 24 provinces, with the highest number of cases being recorded in the central part of Argentina - in the city of Buenos Aires, the province of the same name, and the provinces of Entre Rios, Santa Fe, and Cordoba...

(MENAFN) Argentina's Ministry of Health disclosed on Saturday that the country has recorded a total of 163,419 cases of dengue fever thus far in 2024, as reported in its National Epidemiological Bulletin (BEN).

The bulletin indicated that the central region accounted for the highest number of cases, closely followed by the northeastern region. Conversely, the western and southern regions reported relatively fewer cases of the disease.

The cumulative incidence rate currently stands at 384 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, reflecting the widespread impact of dengue fever across various regions of Argentina. Argentina records over half a million dengue cases in 2024

Argentina has detected 504,580 cases of dengue so far this year, an outbreak that is 3.26 times larger than a year before, driven by infections in the Central region, Xinhua reports citing the Health Ministry, Azernews reports.

The number of cases represents 97 percent of the 521,746 total cases registered during 2023's dengue season from week 31 of 2023 to week 22 of 2024, according to the ministry's National Epidemiological Bulletin.

The Central region registered the highest number of cases, representing 61.9 percent of the total, followed by the Northwest region at 22.8 percent and the Northeast region at 13.1 percent.

The disease is spreading locally in 19 of the 24 districts of the South American country and has caused a total of 365 deaths this season, among which 355 were registered in 2024.​..

The number of dengue cases in Argentina this year has crossed the 512,000 threshold representing a 318% year-on-year increase, despite a ten-week downward trend presently. The Health Ministry's National Epidemiological Bulletin (BEN) mentioned 512,458 cases in the first 24 weeks of the year, or 97% of the 529,625 contagions this season, which began in Epidemiological Week 31 of 2023.

Regarding the number of fatalities, 358 occurred this year out of the 369 during the season. The disease has autochthonous viral circulation in 19 of the country's 24 districts. The highest number of cases was detected in the central region (61.4%), followed by the northwest region (23.3%) and the northeast (13.1%), the study also found. The average age of the deceased is 49 years, with casualties in 18 of the country's 24 jurisdictions.​..

BUENOS AIRES, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Argentina has logged over 520,000 cases of dengue since the start of this year, with an outbreak 3.17 times larger than last year, but there were signs of decreasing in the past few weeks, the Health Ministry said Sunday.

In the first 27 weeks of this year, health authorities registered 520,037 cases of dengue, or 97 percent of the 537,249 infections logged in the entire season starting in epidemiological week 31 of 2023, according to the ministry's National Epidemiological Bulletin.

The highest number of cases was logged in the central region with 60.7 percent, followed by the northwest with 24.1 percent, and the northeast with 13.1 percent. ...
