In a significant development in the public health situation, the first autochthonous case of monkeypox has been confirmed in Argentina. The patient is a 22-year-old man residing in San Isidro, a municipality in the north of Greater Buenos Aires. Unlike previous cases reported in the country, this individual has no history of travel abroad.

The young man began to experience symptoms compatible with monkeypox and, after going to the hospital, samples were collected for analysis. These samples were sent to the Malbrán Institute, where the positive result was obtained within 24 hours. The patient is currently isolated at home while receiving treatment for the skin lesions characteristic of the disease.

The confirmation of this case marks a milestone in the surveillance of monkeypox in Argentina, especially given that the World Health Organization (WHO) had declared an international emergency regarding the disease. This is the first autochthonous case recorded since said declaration.

Context and Previous Cases

Prior to this case, the Ministry of Health of Buenos Aires had reported two cases in the province. One of them corresponds to a person residing in La Matanza, who had traveled abroad and presented symptoms since June. The other case refers to an individual from Berazategui who began to show symptoms in July after having had contact with a traveler. Both patients were in good health...​

The national health authorities updated the number of cases of monkeypox detected in the country since mid-July to 51, when the first infection was confirmed so far this year and since epidemiological surveillance was intensified due to the declaration of an international public health emergency. The total number of cases reported a few moments ago is nine more than what was reported a week ago.

“The epidemiological curve shows a persistence in the detection of cases from [mid-July] and up to the current week,” the Ministry of Health of the Nation reported today on the local situation. Only the city of Buenos Aires added positive cases in this update, according to data from the National Epidemiological Bulletin (BEN) as of the 14th of this month.

So far, the provinces have reported 297 cases with symptoms at the time of consultation that made one suspect the infection, compared to the 234 known a week ago. 17% of those who, upon consultation, had symptoms that made one suspect they could have been infected were confirmed, but it is unknown how many were ruled out with laboratory tests and how many are still under study.

“The highest number of notifications [for cases with clinical and epidemiological suspicion] was registered, so far, in the [first week of September] with 81 reported cases,” the BEN indicates. Between the 8th and 14th of this month, the period that was updated today, “61 notifications were registered: 25% less than the previous week.”

Of the 51 confirmed cases so far, the official communication continues, “75% (38 cases) were reported from [the third week of August]: 10 corresponded to previous weeks, but were reported after the alert” issued by the Ministry of Health.

The age range of people who contracted the infection was expanded: they were between 20 and 49 years old, an age that rose to 56 years.
Almost all men

There are 50 men and one woman confirmed cases; three required hospitalization in general care rooms. Nine stated that they had returned from a trip (among the destinations is Brazil) or had recent contact with travelers when referring to the route of infection. Transmission occurs through contact with skin lesions or unprotected handling of items that may have been exposed (clothing, bedding, towels or utensils).

“According to the data available so far, the most affected populations are men who have sex with men (73% of 33 cases with information on this epidemiological variable) and the main risk factor is having had sexual relations with new, multiple and occasional partners,” reports Salud.

In 20 of the 25 cases in which it was clinically recorded whether or not they were carriers of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), co-infection with the mpox virus occurred.

The appearance of a rash or pustules in different parts of the body (genital or perianal area, hands, face or torso) is the main symptom, followed by fever and muscle pain, among others.

Most of the cases, both positive and suspected, are being identified in the city and province of Buenos Aires. The health authorities of the Capital confirmed 38 of 103 suspected cases, according to La Nación, while the health authorities of Buenos Aires confirmed six of the 117 reported to the national epidemiological surveillance system. 11 new cases of monkeypox reported in Argentina

Argentine health authorities Monday reported the detection of 11 new cases of monkeypox in patients aged 34 on average with a minimum age of 20 years and a maximum of 56.

Seven of these cases were in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA) and the four others were in the province of Buenos Aires. So far in 2024, 65 infections -64 men and one woman- have been confirmed, all of them belonging to variant clade II. ...

A total of 12 of these 65 patients had a recent travel history. So far, no deaths have been reported. The National Health Ministry's Epidemiological Bulletin also noted that there were 357 suspected cases reported. ...

Epidemiological communication on Mpox

The National Epidemiological Surveillance System (BEN) reports the first case of Mpox Clade Ib in Argentina, detected in a 31-year-old man residing in the City of Buenos Aires (CABA) with no travel history. The patient was treated on an outpatient basis and is recovering well. In 2016, five other cases (four in CABA and one in Río Negro) belonging to Clade II had already been confirmed. It is important to note that Clade Ib is more severe and contagious, making it crucial for jurisdictional health systems to strengthen surveillance and public health measures following the notification of this first case.

The emergence of clade Ib in Argentina occurs within a context of global expansion. In 2026, 14 cases of this clade were confirmed in the Americas, distributed across the USA (9 cases), Canada (2 cases), Brazil (2 cases), Mexico (1 case), and now Argentina (1 case). Community transmission has also been documented in France, Portugal, and Spain.

The Ministry of Health requests that jurisdictions intensify their suspicion of Mpox in patients presenting with umbilicated lesions or proctitis, swollen lymph nodes, extreme fatigue, and sore throat, always inquiring about travel history or contact with travelers. Patient isolation is recommended until the lesion scabs fall off and a new layer of skin forms, and the use of personal protective equipment is advised for all healthcare personnel involved in their care. Contact tracing should also begin within 24 hours of suspected infection, with 21 days of follow-up to detect early symptoms.​
