Autochthonous dengue cases were detected in Argentina: how to prevent it and what are the warning signs
The three affected had not traveled abroad. The infection is transmitted by the bite of mosquitoes that have the virus. What are the recommendations for the summer?
January 4, 2023

In Argentina, three cases of autochthonous dengue were recently confirmed. So far, two of them were reported by the Ministry of Health of the province of Córdoba, and the third was notified in the City of Buenos Aires and reported in the bulletin of the national health portfolio. It means that the patients acquired the viral infection through mosquitoes within the territories of those jurisdictions and without having traveled.

The case of dengue in the City of Buenos Aires was confirmed during the first week of last December, according to the latest Epidemiological Bulletin of the National Ministry of Health. Meanwhile, the other two cases registered in Córdoba were confirmed by the health portfolio of that province.

Given the detection of this type of dengue cases, the epidemiology experts from the Ministry in charge of Carla Vizzotti pointed out that "there is an increase in cases in neighboring countries and there are already 8 confirmed imported cases and 11 probable cases (among imported and autochthonous)”.

The viral circulation in other countries of the region and the beginning of the summer season “force to pay special attention to the suspicion of dengue and the corresponding control actions. Faced with a possible increase in the flow of people inside and outside the country, typical of the incoming dates, it is urged to reinforce surveillance and preventive actions," the specialists emphasized...

Dengue: autochthonous cases were detected in 5 of the 24 jurisdictions of Argentina
According to official information, the cases of people with the infection increased by 65% compared to the same period last year. Chikungunya fever cases were also reported.
February 6, 2023

Since last December, autochthonous cases of dengue have already been detected in 5 of the 24 jurisdictions of Argentina. They are people who contracted the mosquito -borne viral disease in the territory in which they reside, without having traveled to other countries. There are also imported cases of Chikungunya fever .

According to official information, since last December autochthonous cases of dengue have already been detected in 5 of the 24 jurisdictions of Argentina: City of Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Tucumán, Salta and Santa Fe.

According to the latest epidemiological bulletin of the National Ministry of Health, “during the last week , dengue viral circulation has been identified in different locations in the country, registering confirmed cases with no travel history. The cases were notified during the week, with the onset of symptoms in the last weeks of January...

...According to the national Health portfolio, since last August 1,629 cases of dengue have been reported in Argentina. But the contagion curve accelerated last January.

Between the weeks of January 8 to 22, a weekly average of 166 notifications of dengue cases in the country was registered. This figure represents 65% more than the average registered for the same weeks the previous season (2021-2022) and 66% less than the average registered in the 2020-2021 season.

The majority were imported cases, that is, patients who had traveled to other countries and returned with the infection. But in 5 jurisdictions autochthonous cases have already been registered since last December until now.

In Salta, 7 cases of people with dengue without a travel history were confirmed. There it was possible to identify that the people had the DEN-2 serotype. Within the group of 7 people, 5 correspond to the Salvador Mazza locality, and the other two were confirmed in Aguaray and San Ramón de la Nueva Orán.

Meanwhile, in the town of Lules, province of Tucumán , three autochthonous cases were confirmed with also identification of the DEN-2 serotype.

In the province of Santa Fe , another 9 confirmed cases with DEN-1 identification residing in the town of Las Toscas were identified. All of them corresponding to the last week of January.

In turn, probable cases of dengue have been reported in the same period in nearby towns: San Antonio de Obligado (1 case), Villa Guillermina (1 case), Campo Hardy (1 case). These cases are under study and the epidemiological investigation is being carried out.

In the City of Buenos Aires (CABA) , two cases were also confirmed in the Villa del Parque neighborhood. One of the cases has the DEN-1 serotype and the second case is pending serotyping.

In addition to dengue, another mosquito-borne disease began to affect the country again: chikungunya fever. It is also transmitted by the bite of an infected female Aedes aegypti mosquito , as is the case with dengue.

During last January, 24 cases of chikungunya fever were confirmed in Argentina. These patients had a history of travel to Paraguay. In addition, a probable case is registered in Formosa, which had a history of travel to Corrientes. Therefore, there is an ongoing investigation.

In Córdoba, the Ministry of Health of the Province reported the detection of four cases of dengue, two with a travel history (Colombia and Peru) and two autochthonous.

A new case of chikungunya was also confirmed in that province days ago. This is an adult male, resident of the province of Buenos Aires, with a history of travel to Paraguay, who was in Córdoba for work reasons. The patient was treated on an outpatient basis at Rawson Hospital. Thus, there are 3 cases of chikungunya detected in Córdoba that had a travel history (one to Brazil and two to Paraguay).

Faced with the identification of dengue viral circulation in different locations and the presence of imported cases of Chikungunya fever, as well as the increase in cases in Paraguay, the National Ministry of Health urged health centers and hospitals to strengthen detection , registration and complete notification of suspected cases of arboviruses, as the viruses are called, all transmitted by arthropods, such as mosquitoes...

Dengue cases in Argentina grew 252% in a week
The increase in diagnoses was recorded in people who had no history of travel abroad. Which are the most affected jurisdictions?
February 20, 2023

The incidence of dengue, the infection transmitted by mosquito bites, is growing in Argentina. During the last reported week, autochthonous dengue cases -that is, people who were infected without having traveled abroad- increased by 252% compared to the previous week.

This was reported by epidemiology experts in the latest bulletin from the National Ministry of Health. Between the last week of December and the last week of January, 75 confirmed and probable autochthonous cases of dengue were reported.

In contrast, during the first week of February, 264 autochthonous cases of dengue were reported in the country. Within this total, 77 were confirmed and 184 were considered probable cases of dengue.

According to data from the bulletin, there is viral circulation in six jurisdictions of the country: Córdoba, Santa Fe, City of Buenos Aires, Jujuy, Salta and Tucumán. Although the provinces of Santa Fe, Tucumán and Salta have registered the highest number of cases, according to the national Health portfolio and the Ministry of Health of Córdoba.

In the province of Córdoba, “a case of dengue and another of chikungunya have been added in recent days. In total, so far in the 22/23 season, five cases of dengue have been reported, of which 3 have a travel history (2 to Brazil, 1 to Bolivia, detected in San Francisco) and two autochthonous, both from Capital”, informed the provincial Ministry.

The circulating virus serotypes are DEN-1 in the jurisdictions of the Central region (Santa Fe and the City of Buenos Aires) and DEN-2 in the NOA (Jujuy, Salta and Tucumán).

A call for attention was made to the teams of health centers and hospitals to reinforce the suspicion of cases of dengue - as well as chikungunya, which is also circulating in the province of Buenos Aires.

On the one hand, it is a time of travel to areas where there is dengue transmission, such as Brazil. On the other hand, it is combined with a favorable context for the reproduction and propagation of the mosquito and the increase in rainfall...

Biologists are irradiating thousands of male mosquitoes in labs, to be released later, in the hope that their offspring will be unviable because of DNA damage...

They do not rule out that dengue fever mutates and reaches Patagonia

The three cases that are in Chubut at the moment are imported. Climate change could generate a mutation in mosquitoes. The Minister of Health, Miryám Monasterolo, assumed that "we have to know what could happen"

They do not rule out that the expansive wave of dengue, which settled in Santa Fe and the City of Buenos Aires, could reach Chubut and the rest of the Patagonian provinces sooner or later.

This was recognized by the Minister of Health, Miryám Monasterolo, by Cadena Tiempo, who revealed that in a recent health meeting in San Martín de los Andes, "we were warned in anticipation of the arrival of dengue in Patagonia."

Dengue, associated with certain northern areas, today presents more than 50,000 cases scattered throughout all the provinces, many of which are imported from risk areas.
