The Government confirmed a case of bird flu in Argentina and declared a health emergency
It was confirmed by the authorities of the Secretary of Agriculture and the Ministry of Health together with Senasa personnel. This is a case in a migratory bird found in Jujuy that, being infected, could transmit the H5N1 virus to humans. Prevention and measures to take into account
February 15, 2023

The Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Nation, Juan José Bahillo confirmed a case of avian flu (H5N1) in Jujuy and declared a health emergency in the country. As they indicated, the case was confirmed by the Agrifood Health and Quality Service (Senasa) in a wild migratory bird, of the Huallata or Andean Goose species, which was found in said province.

The confirmation was made during a press conference held with authorities from the National Ministry of Health and Senasa, and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, who also issued a series of prevention measures against avian influenza in birds. wild recorded in the region.

“The confirmation of the entry of the virus into the country puts us on alert but it does not surprise us. For some time now we have been working on the prevention of this virus, which unfortunately cannot be controlled due to the migration of birds", explained sources from the Ministry of Agriculture of the Nation, who indicated that it was detected in the Pozuelos lagoon, al northwest of the province of Jujuy, near the border with Bolivia.

“We have migratory routes from the north of our continent. It had already been confirmed in Mexico, Panama, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Uruguay. This sample sent on Monday and that tested positive yesterday is the third that arrived. The other two were negative. The virus does not enter the body through the consumption of birds. Only careless handling of birds can infect humans”, he specified.

And he added: “We are going to strengthen controls at national borders. It is important to communicate to the citizens that in the face of the detection of strange behavior of wild birds or their death, it is important to communicate with Senasa”.

Meanwhile, Sandra Tirado, Secretary of Access to Health explained: “We have been working together for months to monitor the birds that arrive in the country. It must be communicated that the probability of transmission in humans is low and if it occurs it is through the respiratory route or by contact with a dead bird or its secretions. That is why we recommend not touching or approaching birds that show symptoms or act strange or are dead."

“And it should be clarified that the consumption of its meat or derivatives such as eggs does not cause infections in humans. It is also appropriate to remember hygiene measures such as hand washing or correct cooking to handle and consume food, ”she added...

AFFECTED POPULATION DESCRIPTION
A total of nine (9) birds of the species Chloephaga melanoptera, family Anatidae, Andean goose were found dead. Eight (8) of them were in different stages of decomposition and one (1) recently died; it was conditioned for subsequent shipment to the official SENASA laboratory. Laguna de los Pozuelos is a settlement site for wild birds. It is located in the northwest of the province of Jujuy in the Puna area, an area of very low population density and close to the border with Bolivia. So far, no other birds have been affected. Since this is a high altitude area, there are no nearby poultry farms.

Source: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-67509697 Bird flu kills hundreds of flamingos in Argentina

27th November 2023, 12:00 EST
By Vanessa Buschschlüter BBC News

An outbreak of bird flu has killed 220 flamingos in north-western Argentina, officials have confirmed.

The dead birds are of the James's flamingo species (Phoenicoparrus jamesi), which lives at high altitudes in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and Peru.

The H5N1 strain of the avian flu virus currently spreading through South America can infect an entire flock within days...
