Are you really prepared? Big Bear, California

Friday, June 16, 2006 8:39 AM PDT

Disaster can strike at any time. Are you ready? It could be an earthquake, fire, bird flu, storm flooding, terrorist, evacuation or contagious disease? Are you freaking out? Don't. Knowledge is power.

On Saturday, June 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Big Bear Mountain Mutual Aid Association presents the Citizen Preparedness Fair at the Convention Center at Big Bear Lake, which represents Valley agencies.

Guests and exhibits include Smokey Bear, U.S. Forest Service fire education trailer, San Bernardino County home safety education trailer, child car seat safety checks and a child identification program.

During a major disaster, services could be disrupted for several to many days. What if there were no gas, electricity, water, telephone service, food or emergency services available? Are you freaking out again? Don't. Have a plan.

Plan to be on your own for a minimum of 72 hours. Many agencies recommend your plan cover up to five weeks or more. Have an out-of-area contact person. Duplicate important documents and photograph or video valuable items, store copies of pictures and videos in a safety deposit box or with someone you trust.

Develop a disaster supply kit or to-go bag for children, seniors, the disabled and pets. Include items such as a flashlight, battery, wind up radio, map, proper clothing, photo of family members, medications, eye glasses, emergency cash, first aid supplies, food, water, blanket, games for children, hygiene items, permanent marker, paper, tape and house keys.

The Convention Center at Big Bear Lake is at the corner of Division Drive and Big Bear Boulevard, Big Bear Lake.
