Shionogi says Japan OKs influenza drug peramivir
TOKYO, Jan 13 (Reuters) - Japanese drugmaker Shionogi & Co (4507.T) said on Wednesday it has received regulatory approval to make and sell its intravenous influenza drug, Rapiacta, in Japan.
The drug, whose generic name is peramivir, has been available in the United States to treat severely ill patients since the U.S. government gave emergency use authorisation for it in October last year.
Shionogi, which applied for approval from Japanese regulators in November, said the government's go-ahead was given unusually early and marks the first time such general approval has been granted for the drug anywhere in the world.
Shionogi bought the rights to develop and sell peramivir in Japan and Taiwan from U.S. firm BioCryst Pharmaceuticals (BCRX.O) in 2007 for $35 million.
