AHMEDABAD: Swine flu remains the most dreaded influenza virus having claimed over 231 lives in the state but its two family members, Influenza A and B, are no less dangerous.
Take the case of Sheetal Barot, 30, who remained in the ICU for over a month fighting a battle with Influenza A and B and a host of other secondary infections that threatened to claim her life. She is lucky to have survived and be able to tell her tale.
?Swine flu is a rogue virus but Influenza A and B, if not treated properly, can be equally dangerous. Sheetal had high fever and was unconscious when she was brought to Sanjeevani Hospital. She tested positive for Influenza A and B, had lung infection and was in acute respiratory distress. She had also developed liver dysfunction, renal impairment and hypertension. We immediately put her on ventilator,? said Dr Rajesh Mishra, an intensive care specialist.
Sheetal, a resident of Botad in Bhavnagar, had already been to four hospitals in Bhavnagar before she was transferred to Ahmedabad.
For initial five days, Sheetal?s condition was critically stable but then it started deteriorating rapidly. Despite being put on 100 per cent oxygen, her oxygen levels remained dangerously low.
To keep the demand low to match the low supply, Sheetal was put under general anaesthesia (GA) or simply paralysed for four days. ?This was a crucial step as it helped us keep her alive. Then, she started maintaining good oxygen levels and we put her off the anaesthesia,? said Dr Mishra.
He said, ?Apart from keeping the patient under GA, one thing that worked in her favour was that her blood pressure remained normal or near normal. It never crashed.?
Needless to say, Sheetal?s family is simply overwhelmed as she won the battle and returned home. ?I had resigned myself to the fate, convinced that I would lose her. By God?s grace and super-human efforts of the doctors that my wife and mother of my two children is alive and getting back on her feet,? said Sheetal?s husband Vipul who works as an accountant in the marketing yard.
Sheetal at the moment is very weak but is gaining her strength back. ?The doctors have said she should be fine in a month,? said Vipul.
