The therapeutic effect of tigecycline is not influenced by the ESBL character of the Klebsiella pneumoniae strain in experimental pneumonia in rats, in contrast to ceftazidime.

ABSTRACT
The efficacy of tigecycline vs. ceftazidime was compared in fatal pneumonia in rats caused by an ESBL-positive K.pneumoniae or its wild-type progenitor. Ceftazidime at b.i.d. 12.5 or 50 mg/kg/day was effective (50% or 100% rat survival) in the WT-isolate pneumonia, but unsuccessful (100% rat mortality) in the ESBL-variant pneumonia. In contrast, tigecycline at b.i.d. 6.25, 12.5 or 25 mg/kg/day showed dosage-dependent efficacy up to 100% rat survival irrespective the ESBL character of the infecting organism.
