Another Death Blamed on H1N1

There are now 12 deaths officially being blamed on the H1N1 virus. The Province's health officials have confirmed that the latest death being investigated was indeed due to H1N1.

That from Saskatchewan's Deputy Chief Medical Health Officer, Dr. Saqib Shahab.

He says 637 thousand doses of the H1N1 vaccine have now been received by health officials in Saskatchewan which is enough for about two thirds of the population. That includes the doses received Monday.

Dr. Shahab says, in Saskatchewan, the second wave of H1N1 has peaked but with Christmas and New Year's gatherings in the immediate future, the next couple of weeks is the right time to get your vaccination.

The mass immunization clinics will be available around the province through the second week in December and after that, those who wish to be vaccinated will be able to do so through their Public Health Office. (vmf Dec 2/09)

REGINA (CP) ? The number of people who have died from the H1N1 virus in Saskatchewan is up to 12 even as health officials believe the second wave of the flu is on the wane.

Dr. Saqib Shahab, deputy chief medical health officer, says a middle-aged man with underlying health conditions was the latest person to die from swine flu.

Shahab says it appears the second wave of the flu has peaked, but that shouldn't stop people from getting vaccinated.

He says about half of Saskatchewan residents have received the vaccine, although the rate is lower in adults between the ages of 18 and 64.

There has also been a decrease in the number of people with flu symptoms who are visiting emergency rooms.

But health officials say there's still pressure on critical care units, and more ventilators have had to be shipped to hospitals in Saskatoon.
