With all the new deaths in California announced today, I'm not sure if this is number 56 or one of those reported.
First swine-flu related death reported in county

A middle-aged woman became the first person in Ventura County to die from H1N1 flu virus infection, health officials reported Thursday.
The woman lived on the West side of the county and had underlying medical problems that made her at increased risk for illness, health officials said. She was ill for four days before being hospitalized for 10 days. She had been treated with Tamiflu when she died July 12.
The county didn?t report it immediately because the lab results weren?t available, said Robert Levin, Ventura County Public Health officer.
Further information about the woman was not being released because of privacy restrictions.
Levin also declined to identify the hospital where she was treated, saying he was concerned that people won?t go to that hospital and that people might call hospital staff to get details.
In California, as of July 9, there have been 2,469 cases, 287 hospitalizations and 32 deaths. Nationwide, as of July 16, there have been 37,246 confirmed and probable cases of H1N1 influenza, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The number of cases of swine flu in the Ventura County stood at 25 in early June and is now at 46. Levin believes the rising number reflects laboratory processing speeds, not an intensified spreading of the virus.
?What?s unusual about it is that the flu season should have been over weeks ago but we?re continuing to see cases of flu because we don?t have antibodies in our blood streams because it?s a brand new virus,? he said.
