Huíla registers ten suspected cases of polio

Lubango - A team from the National Directorate of Public Health has been investigating since this Thursday the possible existence of ten suspected cases of Poliomyelitis, reported in three municipalities in Huíla province.

The information was released today, Friday, in Lubango, by the spokesman for the local provincial health office, Júlio Madaleno, stressing that suspected cases were identified last December in Matala (4), Quipungo (4) and Cacula (2) , upon a complaint from the population, and an epidemiological surveillance team was activated at the time.

In statements to the press, Júlio Madaleno said that at the end of last year, cases of acute flaccid paralysis were reported in these municipalities, where specialists work to gather information to confirm or rule out the suspicions.

He highlighted that acute flaccid paralysis occurs, hence the surveillance notified public health and automatically the cases began to be followed in compliance with international requirements, so the national directorate is carrying out studies in the three selected municipalities.

However, the official said that although a massive vaccination campaign is not taking place, parents and guardians can go to health posts and centers to routinely vaccinate children under five.

After six years without a case of the disease, Huíla again registered a confirmed case in 2019 in the municipality of Quipungo.
