HHS and CDC supporting safe, expedient departure of US citizens

The U.S. Government is relocating approximately 210 U.S. citizens from Wuhan, China back to the United States. The Department of State has the lead for the safe and expedient ordered departure of US citizens. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are collaborating with the Department of State on the logistics of public health evaluations for every traveler on the flight. HHS and CDC are working with partners to ensure that any traveler who develops symptoms during their journey receives appropriate medical care.

Our primary objective is to facilitate the safe return of these Americans while protecting the public’s health. These individuals will be screened before they take off; monitored during the duration of the flight by medical personnel on board; screened again on landing to refuel in Anchorage, Alaska; monitored on the last leg of the flight by medical personnel on board; evaluated upon arrival at March Air Reserve Base in Riverside County, California; and then monitored for symptoms post-arrival.

Seems a last minute change to divert to the air base. This might have been a surprise to the passengers.

"It's not immediately clear why the itinerary was changed from the civilian airport to a military base. Curt Hagman, a San Bernardino County commissioner who is on the board of the Ontario airport, said they were informed Tuesday night that the plane will not land there."

There's an Agatha Christie story that goes like this. 195 is the latest count. Whatever the numbers it is good that these dedicated Americans are back home. The youngest is only 1 month old.

Officials in Alaska said all 195 passengers passed health screenings. One person with a fever in Wuhan did not board the plane for the U.S., Braden said.

According to a health department statement, the transfer to the hospital was "out of an abundance of caution'' and not because there was any positive indication of coronavirus, which has to be verified through serology tests.

"Testing samples will be submitted to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and results expected later this week,'' according to the agency. "No confirmed cases have been reported in Riverside County.''

Minor taken to hospital, another traveler arrives
at March Air Reserve Base

A minor, who is part of a group being housed at March Air Reserve Base, has developed a fever
and been taken to Riverside University Health System-Medical Center for testing and
observation. The minor was transported by ambulance Monday evening out of an abundance of
caution and is accompanied by a parent. The two are part of a group of 195 passengers who were
flown to March from China last week and placed under a 14-day federal quarantine.

Testing samples will be submitted to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and results
expected later this week. No confirmed cases have been reported in Riverside County.
In addition, an individual who arrived Monday at Los Angeles International Airport on a flight
from China has been placed under federal quarantine and transferred to March Air Reserve
Base.

The individual has no symptoms of novel coronavirus, but was moved to March out of an
abundance of caution and because of their travel history. The federal quarantine order for this
person expires Feb. 6. The individual will be isolated away from the 195 others who arrived last
week.

[h=1]HHS and CDC Receive Additional Flights Carrying Passengers from China[/h]
Media Statement

This week, several planes carrying passengers from Wuhan China will arrive in three states. These locations are Travis Air Force Base in Sacramento, CA, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego, CA, Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX, and Eppley Airfield in Omaha, NE.

These planes will be met by a team of CDC personnel deployed there to assess the health of the passengers. The passengers have been screened, monitored and evaluated by medical and public health personnel every step of the way, including before takeoff and during the flight. CDC staff will conduct risk assessments to ensure the health of each traveler, including temperature checks and observing for respiratory symptoms.

These passengers will be issued quarantine orders upon arrival at their designated quarantine location. This legal order is intended to protect the travelers, their families, and the community. This quarantine order will begin on the day the flight left Wuhan and will continue for up to 14 days. Medical care will be readily available at the first onset of symptoms, if needed.

CDC will work with the state and local public health departments to transport any passenger exhibiting symptoms to a hospital for further evaluation.

CDC is committed to protecting the health and safety of Americans. We continue to believe the immediate risk of coronavirus exposure to the general public is low, however, CDC is undertaking these measures to help keep that risk low. CDC is taking these measures to fully assess and care for these passengers to protect them, their loved ones, and their communities.

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – A fifth person who was evacuated from the Wuhan region of China and brought to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar was hospitalized Thursday after developing symptoms that warranted further observation for possible exposure to the deadly coronavirus.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the patient — described only as an adult — “developed a fever or a cough” that prompted the precautionary hospitalization. The person was taken to UC San Diego Health.

Four other people, including a 4-year-old girl, were hospitalized Wednesday afternoon, hours after a plane carrying 167 Americans landed at the northern San Diego military base. All of the passengers underwent medical screening upon landing...

Two additional patients under quarantine at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar have been taken to local hospitals for evaluation as they had developed a fever or cough that require further evaluation. The total number of patients transported to hospitals from the base for further evaluation is now seven.

On Friday, one adult was transported to UC San Diego Health and one child to Rady Children’s Hospital.

Two other patients — one a 4-year-old girl — taken from Marine Corps Air Station Miramar to Rady Children’s on Wednesday to sit under observation for novel coronavirus have tested negative for the illness and returned to 14-day quarantine at the air station.

A second plane carrying 65 evacuees from Wuhan landed at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar Friday morning after a brief stopover in Vancouver, British Columbia. These patients were screened by U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention personnel and did not appear to show any symptoms, so were allowed to join on-base facilities for the duration of their quarantine.

The plane landed at MCAS Miramar shortly before 8:50 a.m...
