Peculiar symptoms are being noticed in people living in Machenahalli of Ambale village. Without proper information on the ailment which causes such symptoms, people are suspecting that they must be suffering from chikungunya.

About 15 days ago two to three people in a house suffered from severe head ache, body ache along with body rashes. Within 15 days, the peculiar disease has gripped the entire village, keeping most of the people indoors.

The patients say that there is nobody to diagnose the ailment and prescribe medicines at the Primary Health Centre. Since everyone from the village are going to a hospital at Javagal, there is a huge crowd outside the hospital. Though the patients have got their blood tests done, the doctors at this hospital too have failed to find the reason for the problem.

Last year after two Chikungunya cases were detected, District Health Department started fogging and controlled mosquitoes in the area. However since the symptoms are similar to that of Chikungunya, people suspect it must be Chikungunya.

“From the last two weeks, everyone is busy visiting hospitals. We have done all tests but none of the doctors are sure about the problem. We are spending Rs 100 per day to go to Javagal hospital and get medicines. If District hospital puts up a camp in the village it will be of great help to the poor ,” says Ananth Achar, a resident of Machenahalli who is also suffering from peculiar symptoms.

Speaking to Deccan Herald District Medical Officer Doddamallappa said that no Chikungunya cases have been detected at Machenahalli. “The residents are suffering from flu. It is not Chikungunya for sure,” he said and promised to hold camp in the village from Sunday onwards.

For reference, confirmed cases of H1N1 have been increasing of late in Karnataka from around 1 a day in February to 3 a day this last week. There were also 5 fatalities reported this week, as compared to 4 in all of March. The rash seems to suggest that it's not flu though.

?Mysterious symptoms in Machenahalli not Chikungunya?

The mysterious symptoms of disease which appeared in Machenahalli Thanda is not chikungunya, said Taluk Medical Officer Lokesh.


Speaking to Deccan Herald, he said ?58 persons have developed viral fever symptoms in the village. The blood samples were collected and sent to Shimoga laboratory.?

?No new cases have been reported in the district. The residents of the region have been suffering from fever for the last one week. Owing to viral fever, the residents are suffering from joint pain. The larvae found in stagnant water in the village has been sent to laboratory,? he said.

The patients have been given medicine for fever, tiredness and joint pain. Similar symptoms were found in Machenahalli last year.

Fogging has been done in the village to control mosquitoes.

District Health Officer (DHO) Dr Eshwarappa said health awareness programme is being organised throughout the district. Owing to the consumption of contaminated water, residents had developed health complications in Hebbur at Ajjampura 15 days ago. No monkey fever or Kyasanoor Forest Disease has been detected in the district. Normally monkey fever appears in Malnad between December and June.

Shortage of staff

Chikmagalur district has 86 Primary Health Centres. The sanctioned posts to these centres is 126. However, there are only 86 doctors.

There are six hospitals which do not have doctors. As many as 535 doctors will be recruited in the state. Accordingly, the district will get 20, he added.
