Algiers worried about increased contamination

AFP / 09 July 2020 at 3.15 p.m.

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune chairs a working meeting Thursday to face the upsurge in Covid-19 cases, as the Maghreb country most affected by the pandemic approaches the symbolic bar of 1,000 dead.

Five walis (prefects) from the most affected regions - Algiers, Oran (north-west), Biskra (north-east), S?tif (east) and Ouargla (south) - take part in this meeting alongside Prime Minister Abdelaziz Djerad, heads of security services and members of the Scientific Committee for monitoring the evolution of the pandemic, which reports to the Ministry of Health, according to the official agency APS.

On Thursday, the authorities ordered again the confinement of two municipalities in the wilaya of El Kala, bordering Tunisia, two days after a similar decision concerning 18 municipalities in the wilaya of S?tif. This rebound in cases of contamination is due, according to the authorities, to the "relaxation" of the population and to the "non-compliance" with prevention and protection rules.

The wearing of a sanitary mask has been compulsory since May 24 and offenders are sentenced to heavy fines. But many Algerians continue to be resistant to the wearing of masks and to measures of physical distancing. One month after the first deconfinement measures, the government demanded at the end of June a tightening of the sanctions against the offenders. And he advised the local authorities to proceed to the "targeted containment" of the localities and districts plagued by foci of infection.

In total, nearly 17,500 cases of Covid-19 have been officially declared on Algerian soil since the registration of the first case on February 25, including 978 deaths. Health professionals, who have been on the front lines for months and who keep calling on the population to take responsibility and claim more resources from the authorities, are paying a heavy price. Professor Abdelkrim Soukehal, a member of the Scientific Committee, announced on Wednesday that 1,700 health workers, all bodies combined, had been infected. 31 died, including 4 doctors during this week.

Incident at Bouira University Hospital: its director clarifies

By Khelifa Litamine -July 14, 2020 / 17:04

The director of the CHU Mohamed Boudiaf in Bouira, Dr. Boutemeur Djamel wanted to provide details on the attempted assault in his office yesterday July 13.

In a statement made to the Berber TV channel, he denied having jumped from the 3rd floor as reported by some media, but his office is on the ground floor, claiming that he is in good health and that he had no injuries.

On the details of the case, Boutemeur Djamel said "that a group of young thugs belonging to a family who had a victim of the coronavirus in the hospital invaded his office last night to demand the recovery of the remains of the deceased before the Covid-19 test is confirmed ”.

Realizing the danger, the director of the CHU had to leave his office through the window to avoid any physical attack on these people. At that moment, his secretary called the police and security agents to control the situation, he said.

As a result, the health directorate of the province of Bouira reacted to the fact and it "firmly condemned these irresponsible actions of resorting to violence against the medical, paramedical and administrative teams which are repeated and we see them almost all days ".

According to the press release from the health management, "these behaviors considerably weaken the morale of the health workers in all their teams and they have been recruited for more than 5 months for patients, in particular those infected with Covid-19".

Management considers that "it is inconceivable and in this critical period that our country is going through and the sacrifices of doctors, paramedics and administrators who work day and night to improve the conditions of patients and ensure that they adopt a behavior which is not in the interest of the patients or in the interest of the medical, paramedical and administrative staff ”.

Fawzi Derrar: the Covid-19 virus has mutated and is spreading quickly in Algeria

By Khelifa Litamine -July 14, 2020 / 15:54

The director general of the Pasteur institute in Algeria, Dr Fawzi Derrar indicated that the Covid-19 virus which circulates in Algeria, has slightly mutated, becoming faster in its spread.

Speaking on public television, ENTV, the DG of the Pasteur Institute in Algeria, recalled the existence of four or five varieties of Covid-19 virus worldwide, "in Algeria we have the G variety" he mentioned.

On the evolution of the virus, Dr. Derrar explained that lately "we have seen a mutation in the genes of the virus making it not more dangerous, but faster in its spread".

However, he stressed that these mutations “do not only concern the virus existing in Algeria, but in several other countries.” As a result, these mutations have enabled “the appearance of several clusters in different countries in the world, especially in the United States ”.

However "this situation leads us to adapt and take measures as quickly as possible to control this high spread," said Dr. Derrar again.

Moreover, according to him the provisions decided by the head of state recently (traffic stop between the wilayas) and (partial reconfiguration in several municipalities) "are very effective in dealing with the spread of virus on the ground" a he added.
