Alert in Chile possible spread of influenza A (H1N1)
Legislators of the opposition Socialist Party (PS) of Chile warned on day 20 of a possible spread of the virus A (H1N1) among the affected population of the B?o B?o region affected by the earthquake of 27 February.
So far have been confirmed in the province of Arauco, in this region of central Chile, 24 cases of people infected with the virus A (H1N1), lawmakers said Fulvio Rossi and Juan Luis Castro.
MPs attributed these infections in conditions that are hundreds of families who live in tents in the middle of low temperatures.
In Arauco 17,000 people are homeless living in tents, are therefore susceptible to disease, Rossi and Castro added following a meeting with the Chilean Undersecretary of Assistance Networks of the Ministry of Health, Giovanna Gutierrez.
The 8.8 Richter scale earthquake in Chile left five hundred dead and 800,000 homeless, according to figures from the Chilean government.
Many of the homeless families sleeping in tents and shacks erected on sites where their homes were situated.
The most dramatic cases have been reported in the coastal regions of Maule and B?o B?o, flattened by successive tidal waves following the earthquake.
According to legislators, the vaccination coverage against influenza A (H1N1) is about 30 percent to just 10 days of the end of the campaign.
Rossi and Castro said there have been delays in dsitribuci?n vaccines, but also denounced the lack of willingness of people to get vaccinated.
