Norovirus expected to hit schools

By Lea Storry, Calgary Herald January 8, 2011

After almost 34 outbreaks of Norovirus in Calgary in two months, health officials are preparing for the worst.

Dr. Judy MacDonald, the region's medical officer of health, said there were 10 outbreaks of the Norovirus in November in long-term senior care centres. In December, 24 outbreaks were confirmed -- well above the four outbreaks recorded in all of 2009.

"We are continuing to see outbreaks reported in January," said MacDonald.
"We've had 10 outbreaks of gastrointestinal illness but they haven't been confirmed as Norovirus."

Resort hotel hit by outbreak

Staff ill, guests quarantined at Lake Louise

By Deborah Tetley, Calgary Herald May 6, 2011 3:06 AM

A half-dozen staff at Chateau Lake Louise are off work following a virus outbreak at the popular hotel that left roughly 20 travellers quarantined in their rooms for several days.

Public health officials said Thursday the intense gastrointestinal illness that struck about 36 people -including 16 staff -is most likely the highly infectious Norovirus, although it can't be confirmed because no specimens were available.

In January, AHS reported 34 outbreaks of Norovirus in Calgary in two months -well above the four cases recorded in all of 2009. That same month officials warned the virus would likely hit schools during the winter.

Norovirus pops up in region

December 15, 2011 By editor

The appearance of the Norovirus is nothing new, according to an Alberta Health Services official, but the spread of it so far this year is a little out of the ordinary.

Dr. Chris Sikora, AHS?s medical officer of health for the Edmonton zone, said that there have been 59 cases of the virus in the Capital Region so far this winter in hospital, long-term care facilities and daycares.

?The Norovirus, or Norwalk-like virus, does creep up within our communities on a yearly, basis, usually within the fall-winter time period,? Sikora said. ?This particular year is similar to other years, although we are seeing more numbers of cases than last year.?

There were recently seven cases of Norovirus reported at Leduc Hospital, with one unit of the facility closed down to prevent the spread.

Confirmed cases of norovirus at Leduc Hospital

By Bobby Roy
Posted 16 hours ago

...Alberta Health Services (AHS) has reported the Leduc Community Hospital has been hit with 15 confirmed cases of the norovirus as of Dec. 14.

There shouldn't be any serious cause for concern however, explained Chris Sikora, medical officer for the AHS Edmonton Zone.

"The vast majority of the time it's not serious and the situation at the Leduc hospital is not any different because we are seeing those who are infected with the typical symptoms," said Sikora.

Hospital administration has identified the unit, unit 32, which has been affected by the norovirus and is not allowing any new patients into it.

"As a general rule with an outbreak, we'll close the area to admissions. We don't want to expose any new patients to an environment at risk," explained Sikora.

Christmas cheer muted by Norovirus in Edmonton

CBC News

Posted: Dec 22, 2011 11:15 AM MT

Norovirus is being spread along with Christmas cheer in the Edmonton area, says Alberta Health Services.

Norovirus has been circulating in the capital region since the beginning of November, leaving most who contact the illness stuck at home with fever and nausea.

The disease is now taking advantage of Christmas gatherings and parties, said AHS.

?Anyone who is ill, or suspects they might be ill, should stay home from work, refrain from visiting loved ones in seniors? residences and other facilities, and refrain from preparing food for others," said Dr. Christopher Sikora, Edmonton Zone Medical Officer of Health.
