A student who contracted diphtheria is the first person in the Edmonton area in a decade to be diagnosed with the illness.

Eleven people who came into contact with the student at Evansdale School and at home are now in isolation and being monitored for symptoms by public health officials, Dr. Chris Sikora, an Edmonton zone medical health officer with Alberta Health Services, said Tuesday.

Edmonton Public Schools spokeswoman Carrie Rosa said Tuesday the student, diagnosed with cutaneous diphtheria (a skin infection) last week, attends Evansdale, which is in north-central Edmonton and has a large population of newcomers to Canada.

The diphtheria case is the second in Alberta this year, following another case in the Calgary area, Alberta Health Services spokeswoman Kirsten Goruk said. That case is being managed by the federal government?s First Nations Inuit Health Branch, she said in an email.
