Alberta doctors say measles outbreak could have been prevented

Lisa Johnson, The Canadian Press

October 4, 2025

EDMONTON — Alberta doctors say the death of a premature baby from measles is a stark reminder that Alberta's ongoing measles outbreak could have been prevented.

Dr. Brian Wirzba, the new president of the Alberta Medical Association, which represents physicians, said he was deeply saddened to learn of the death and knew "the family is heartbroken."

The first measles death recorded in the province this year occurred after the baby's mother contracted the disease during pregnancy.

This is the second death in Canada this year.

Dr. Wirzba says the province's vaccination rates remain too low and, as a result, the epidemic is dragging on longer than it should.

In July, Alberta recorded the highest number of measles cases in North America per capita.

Dr. Wirzba urged Albertans to protect themselves against this serious and highly contagious disease.

"We understand that misinformation and disinformation contribute to vaccine hesitancy and that many people are actively targeted by false claims," he said in a statement Friday, offering his condolences and support to the family.

"We also pay tribute to the healthcare team who cared for this child with compassion and dedication; our thoughts are with them as well."

As of Friday, 1,917 cases of measles have been reported by the province on its website this year, including three cases that are currently active and contagious.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported on its website that as of Tuesday, there were a total of 1,544 confirmed cases of measles in the country.

Primary and Preventive Health Minister Adriana LaGrange noted that since the launch of an advertising campaign in Alberta in April, measles vaccinations have increased by 52% compared to the same period last year.

Opposition NDP health critic Sarah Hoffman called on the United Conservative government to do more, including improving access to vaccines and providing front-line health workers with the necessary resources.

Both Dr. Wirzba and Ms. LaGrange emphasized that measles poses the greatest risk to pregnant women and young children, and warned that women planning a pregnancy should get vaccinated.

“By doing so, you are helping to protect yourself, but also the most vulnerable people around you,” added Dr. Wirzba.

Ms. LaGrange's office did not respond to requests for details, including the date and region of the province where the death occurred.
