Alberta has now confirmed 710 measles cases so far this year, according to new data released Monday, surpassing the 690-case mark set in 1987.

This year now marks the most cases in a calendar year since 1986, when 843 cases were reported.

The initial outbreak this year began in March and the disease has spread throughout the spring, mainly outside of the Calgary and Edmonton health zones.

The South Zone has been the hardest hit, accounting for 520 of the cases so far this year.

The Central Zone has seen 102 cases while the North Zone has seen 69.

No new cases were reported in the Calgary Zone or the Edmonton Zone over the weekend. The province's two most populous health zones have seen a total of 19 cases so far this year, between them.

The spread of measles has occurred primarily among children and teenagers: about 29 per cent of the cases are among kids under the age of five, while 46 per cent are among those between the ages of five and 17...

The U.S. departures area at the Calgary International Airport was the site of a potential measles exposure just over two weeks ago, AHS officials said Wednesday.

The province’s South zone has seen 549 cases and the Central health zone has had 103 cases reported. The majority of the new cases, 16, were in the south zone.

Physicians brace for summer travel season as Alberta tops 800 measles cases

CBC
Mon, June 9, 2025 at 3:11 p.m. EDT·4 min read

As summer approaches, Alberta's measles case counts are expected to keep climbing and some experts worry transmission will become even more widespread.

With 31 new cases reported over the weekend, Alberta's total case count jumped to 809 by midday Monday.

Five people are currently hospitalized due to the virus, including two patients who are in intensive care.

The outbreaks began in March and while cases have been confirmed in all zones, the south, central and north zones are the hardest hit.

"This is not showing signs of slowing at this point," said Caroline Colijn, a professor and Canada Research Chair of Mathematics for Evolution, Infection and Public Health at Simon Fraser University.

Measles is surging in Alberta. Which vaccine-preventable disease could be next?

Measles 'canary in the coalmine,' as experts watch for resurgence of illnesses like polio

Jennifer Lee · CBC News · Posted: Jun 16, 2025 3:00 AM CDT | Last Updated: 4 hours ago

Doctors and scientists worry Alberta's measles outbreaks could signal the start of a new era when other dangerous infectious diseases of the past could re-emerge and pose new health threats.

The province is battling its worst wave of measles cases in nearly half a century and there is no end in sight.

The virus was declared eliminated in Canada in 1998. But vaccination rates have declined in Alberta, and around the country in recent years.

"To some extent measles is the canary in the coalmine," said Dr. Cora Constantinescu, a pediatric infectious diseases specialist at Alberta Children's Hospital in Calgary.

As of Friday, a total of 879 measles cases had been reported in the province since the outbreaks began in March.

Measles cases in Alberta

Measles transmission is currently occurring in Alberta, affecting individuals of all ages – including infants, children and adults. Most reported cases have been in children under 5 years old and those aged 5 to 17 who are not immunized.

Cases have been reported in all zones of the province, with the highest numbers in the south and central zones. Due to the number of people in these areas who may not be immune to measles, it’s likely that some cases are going undetected or unreported.

Alberta Health Services shares known public exposure locations for the Edmonton, Calgary, Central and North Zones. A standing exposure advisory has been issued for the South Zone.

South Zone

Alberta Health Services has issued a standing exposure advisory for the South Zone due to a significant number of cases and widespread potential exposure risk across the zone. The standing measles exposures advisory will replace the use of site-specific exposure advisories which no longer accurately capture the potential risk at this time in the South Zone.

All South Zone residents, workers, students and visitors should ensure their measles immunizations are up to date. Individuals born in or after 1970 with fewer than two documented vaccine doses are at increased risk and should monitor for symptoms and review their immunization records.

Alberta's measles outbreaks have now eclipsed the 1,000-case mark and infectious disease specialists are warning the virus is "impossible to contain," given the current level of transmission.

The province reported another 24 cases on Friday, including 14 in the north zone, nine in the south and one in the Edmonton zone.

This brings the total confirmed cases since the outbreaks began in March to 1,020.

"It is a very grim milestone," said Dr. Karina Top, a pediatric infectious disease physician at the Stollery Children's Hospital in Edmonton, which has been treating children with measles.

"I'm very worried we're going to see more hospitalizations and some deaths soon because we know the death rate is about one to two per thousand. So it's likely that we're going to see that and that will be a very tragic day."

The province has confirmed a case of measles in Calgary involving someone who was at the city’s airport this week.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) says the person took a flight from the Calgary International Airport to the Charlottetown Airport on Wednesday.

Alberta added 38 new measles cases over the weekend.

On Monday, the provincial dashboard showed 23 new cases identified in the north zone since Friday. Fourteen were found in the south and another one in the City of Calgary.

Two people were in hospital with the virus.

The new cases bring the total measles case in Alberta to 1,160 since March. Of those, Alberta Health Services (AHS) reported that eight people were currently known to have an active infection capable of spreading.

AHS says all Albertans living in the south, central and northern zones should be aware that there is a “significant” current risk of measles.

Standing advisories are in effect for the south zone and the following locations in the north:

The Hamlet of La Crete
St. Theresa General Hospital in Fort Vermilion
Northwest Health Centre in High Level

According to the government, between one and three people out of every 1,000 diagnosed with measles die. One in 1,000 diagnosed with measles will get encephalitis...

Alberta has the highest number of measles cases per capita

Posted yesterday at 12:59 PM

With more than 1,000 people infected, Alberta has the highest number of measles cases per capita in North America. This situation worries experts, who believe that the summer's events could further increase the number of cases.

The province said Tuesday that 1,230 people have been infected with measles since the first outbreak of this highly contagious disease in the province in March.

Dr. Mark Joffe , the province's former chief medical officer of health, says the rate is twice that of Ontario.

Ontario is considered the epicenter of the outbreak in Canada in terms of the absolute number of recorded cases, but its population is three times that of Alberta. As of July 2, the province had 1,910 confirmed infections and 313 probable cases recorded since the outbreak began in October.

The outbreak of measles cases comes as the province's largest event, the Calgary Stampede , is taking place , as well as summer camps, family reunions and summer interprovincial trips.

In the United States, according to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , 1,288 cases of measles have been confirmed this year.

Dr. James Talbot , another former Alberta chief public health officer, says the province has even surpassed India in cases per capita .

The country currently has about 10,000 cases of measles for a population of 1.4 billion.
