Number of Albertans hospitalized with COVID-19 drops below 1,000

For the first time since April, the number of people in hospital with COVID-19 in Alberta has dipped below 1,000.

Data provided Wednesday from between May 24 and May 30 shows the number of people in hospital with COVID-19 has dropped to 931. Of those people, 29 are being treated in intensive care.

The last time there were fewer than 1,000 people in hospital with COVID-19 was on April 12, when 990 Albertans were hospitalized.

Alberta Health reported 51 COVID-19 related deaths between May 24 and May 30.

During that seven-day stretch, Alberta reported between 91 and 455 new daily cases of COVID-19 from between 794 and 2,949 tests. Due to limited access to PCR testing in Alberta, the number of new daily cases is likely higher than what’s being reported...

Alberta Health officials reported 42 more COVID-19 deaths over the past week, while the number of hospital and intensive care patients continues to decline.

Alberta's COVID death count since the pandemic began is now 4,567. Although the province reported 42 new deaths, the COVID death count only increased by nine, meaning some previously reported deaths have been removed from the total.

Meanwhile, hospitalizations and ICU admissions dropped again in the latest reporting period, May 31 to June 6.

As of Monday, there are 816 Albertans in hospital with COVID-19, including 24 in ICU.

There were 931 people in hospital with COVID, including 29 ICU patients, last week.

The seven-day PCR test-positivity rate is 15.14 per cent, down from 16.91 per cent a week ago...

• As of 11:59 p.m. June 14, the Alberta government lifted the province's remaining COVID-19 restrictions, ending mandatory masking on public transit, as well as mandatory isolation.
• Though not required, isolation remains recommended for those who have COVID symptoms or a positive test result.
• Saskatchewan and Manitoba have already lifted self-isolation requirements.
• Public health indicators suggest Alberta has passed the sixth wave of COVID-19, spurred mainly by the Omicron BA.2 subvariant, Health Minister Jason Copping said on June 9.
• Hospital and intensive care unit admissions have been declining for weeks. New case counts and the seven-day PCR test-positivity rate have also been dropping. "We are past this wave and in a period of declining transmission," Copping said during a COVID-19 update on June 9. "Barring the arrival of any new variant or subvariant that behaves differently, we expect to see low transmission rates through the summer, especially as more activities move outside."
• As of the end of the day on June 13, 719 people were in hospital with COVID-19, down from 816 people last week.
• 19 people were in intensive care, down from 24 last week.
• 24 new COVID deaths were reported between June 7 and June 13. A total of 4,591 Albertans have died of the disease.
• There were 1,442 new COVID cases reported from June 7 to June 13 out of 10,980 tests. The case count includes only those who test positive on a PCR test, which most Albertans can't access.
• The 7-day average PCR test positivity rate was 13.21 per cent as of June 10.
• Copping said that as of May 26, Evusheld, a drug that could prevent people with weakened immune systems from getting COVID-19 is available for eligible Albertans.
• As of May 4, the province is now allowing community providers, such as family physicians, to prescribe Paxlovid to those eligible for the COVID-19 treatment. A positive rapid test will now be accepted to confirm COVID-19 infection in order to prescribe Paxlovid.
• The eligibility list for Paxlovid now includes all Albertans 60 and up — and Indigenous people 50 and up — with 2 doses or less of vaccine and at least one pre-existing condition. Also added are Albertans 70 and up — and Indigenous people 60 and older — with three or fewer doses and two or more pre-existing conditions...

Alberta health officials provide final ‘regularly scheduled COVID update’

Dr. Deena Hinshaw announced during Wednesday’s news conference that it was the “last regularly scheduled COVID update.”

Alberta’s chief medical officer of health added that: “we will, of course, provide updates as necessary.”

The province had previously moved to offering biweekly updates on COVID-19 data in Alberta.

Health Minister Jason Copping said all indicators continue to drop, including the PCR test positivity (12.2 per cent average, down 1.6 per cent from last week) and wastewater testing.

He said there were 661 Albertans in hospital with COVID-19, 17 of those patients were being treated in the ICU.

Hinshaw said that between June 14 and June 20, 13 COVID-related deaths were reported to Alberta Health...

Fewer than 1,000 new COVID cases confirmed in Alberta in latest update

Alberta confirmed fewer than 1,000 new cases of COVID-19 in its latest reporting period and hospitalizations continue to trend down.

As of Monday, there were 943 cases confirmed province-wide in the previous week and 17 COVID deaths. There are 589 COVID inpatients in Alberta hospitals, 13 of which are in ICU.

Alberta has confirmed a total of 588,691 over the course of the pandemic and 4,621 deaths.

“Today’s COVID-19 update is more good news for Albertans and for our health-care system. The Omicron wave continues to recede. Levels of the virus in wastewater are trending down across the province, including in Edmonton and Calgary, and are at or near the levels before Omicron in many centres,” says Health Minister Jason Copping...

The number of people in hospital with COVID-19 in Alberta continues to drop but the province's PCR testing positivity rate continues to rise.

There are now 552 people in hospital with COVID-19, including 16 patients in intensive care, Alberta Health reported Wednesday. Last week, there were 568 people in hospital, with 13 in ICU.

The province's PCR positivity rate average for the past seven days was 18.31 per cent. The provincial seven-day average on July 1 was just over 15 per cent and one month ago was 12.72 per cent.

The province reported 1,361 new cases of COVID-19 over the week up to July 11, though that number only includes those who test positive on a PCR test, not results from rapid tests...

The COVID-19 test-positivity rate for Alberta has increased for a second straight week, while more people have been admitted to hospital and intensive care unit.

Alberta's total COVID-19 death count increased by 20 to 4,652 after the latest reporting week, provincial data shows.

The number of Albertans in hospital with COVID-19 increased to 559, including 23 ICU patients. There were 552 hospitalizations, including 16 people in ICU, a week ago.

The province's seven-day PCR test-positivity rate is 22.41 per cent, an increase of about 4.1 percentage points from a week ago.

Through those tests, 1,691 new COVID-19 cases were identified from July 12 to 18 — 330 fewer than the previous reporting week...

Hospitalizations up as BA.5 becomes dominant variant in Alberta

Genetic sequencing from PCR tests and wastewater monitoring show the highly contagious BA.5 variant has become dominant in Alberta.

Ninety more Albertans were in hospital compared to the week before, according to the weekly COVID-19 figures released by the province on Wednesday.

As of July 25, 649 COVID-19 patients were in hospitals provincewide. ICU cases saw an increase of 3 from the week before, to 26. The provincial rate of new hospitalizations has been climbing since mid-July.

Alberta marked 13 new deaths, bringing the pandemic death toll to 4,665.

The seven-day average positivity rate on PCR tests rose to 23.3 per cent from 22.5 per cent the week prior. Positivity rates have been rising for the past month on the molecular tests that have been restricted to people with clinical risks for severe outcomes and people who live and work in high-risk settings...

Alberta's COVID-19 death count has increased by eight in the latest reporting week, while hospitalizations increased by more than 50, provincial data shows.

The number of Albertans who have died since the pandemic began is now 4,673.

As of Monday, 702 people were in hospital with COVID-19, including 28 intensive care unit patients. The previous week, 649 people were in hospital with the illness, including 26 in ICU.

The province's seven-day PCR test-positivity rate dropped by one percentage point to 22.3 per cent. The rate was 23.3 per cent a week ago.

Public health officials identified 1,688 new COVID-19 cases in the latest reporting week, July 26 to Aug. 1, which is 29 fewer than the previous week.

More virus is believed to be circulating through the province though, because few people are eligible to get a PCR test and provincial data excludes positive rapid test results...

Alberta's total COVID-19 death toll has jumped by more than 20 and hospitalizations in the province are up by nearly 50 over the latest reporting week.

Provincial data shows 4,694 Albertans have died from COVID-19 as of Monday, an increase of 21 from a week ago.

There are 748 people in hospital with COVID-19, including 28 intensive care unit patients. The net number of ICU patients has not changed from a week ago, but hospitalizations increased by 46.

Alberta's seven-day PCR test-positivity rate increased to 23.73 per cent, up from 22.3 per cent a week ago.

Public health officials identified 1,808 new COVID-19 cases from Aug. 2 to 8. Last reporting week, 120 less cases were identified...

Alberta's pandemic death count increased by 42 in the latest reporting week, while hospitalizations have dropped for a second consecutive week, provincial data shows.

The number of Albertans who have died from COVID-19 since the pandemic started is now 4,832.

There were 799 patients in hospital with COVID-19, including 20 in intensive care units, as of end-of-day Tuesday. Last week, there were 857 Albertans in hospital with the illness, including 20 in ICU.

The province's seven-day PCR test-positivity rate also dropped for the second week in a row, from 18.77 per cent last week to 16.68 per cent this week.

From Aug. 30 to Sept. 5, the latest reporting week, public health officials confirmed 1,084 new COVID-19 cases through PCR testing. This was 283 less than the week before.

The data only reflects PCR testing, for which there is limited eligibility. Postive results from rapid tests are also not counted...

Alberta may be seeing the early signs of a predicted fall COVID-19 upswing, but experts say it's too early to say just how bad it will get.

The number of people hospitalized with COVID jumped to 843 for the week ending on Sept. 20, from 819 the previous week. There was a similar bump the week before.

Intensive care unit admissions related to the virus have remained steady at 26 last week.

"We're starting to see more and more COVID cases coming into the [emergency room]," said Dr. Paul Parks, section president for emergency medicine with the Alberta Medical Association.

"I absolutely think it's the beginning of another surge. It's hard to tell how big it's going to peak or how bad it's going to hit us because we've pretty much abandoned any sort of meaningful surveillance."...

The Alberta government has released new statistics on current COVID-19 cases in the province, indicating that more people are in hospital and dozens have died.

The data, compiled from the past week, says that 33 more people died after contracting the illness.

So far, 4,905 Albertans have died after infection, the province said.

Another 134 Albertans were admitted to hospital, bringing the number of patients being treated for COVID-19 to 980 – 39 of those are in intensive care units...

Alberta reported 46 more COVID-19 deaths over the last two weeks and the number of people being treated in hospital has topped 1,000.

As of Monday, there were 1,014 people being treated for COVID in Alberta hospitals, up 34 from two weeks ago. However, the number in intensive care dropped to 31 from 39 from the period ending Sept. 26. Since the pandemic began, 4,951 Albertans have died from COVID-related complications.

The government said last week that a “data flow problem” meant the usual weekly COVID report would be unavailable until this week.

In the Central Zone, there are 109 people in hospital — up 10 from two weeks ago — with four in ICU — up two from two weeks ago....

Alberta has reached a grim milestone as it has now seen more than 5,000 deaths related to COVID-19.

Provincial data as of Monday shows 5,011 deaths related to the illness — an increase of 28 from last week's update. Alberta has reported the third most COVID deaths across Canada, behind Quebec (16,998 deaths) and Ontario (14,690 deaths).

The first reported COVID-19 death in the province was on March 18, 2020.

As of the latest update for the reporting period of Oct. 18 to 24, there were 1,118 in hospital with COVID, an increase of 48 from the previous update. Included in hospitalizations are 28 ICU patients, a decrease of five from the last update.

Health officials detected 1,461 new COVID-19 cases over the past week with a positivity rate around 18.36 per cent, about the same as the previous seven-day average of 18.45 per cent...
