Alberta to report COVID-19 data once a week

Alberta has announced it will only report COVID-19 data on Wednesdays going forward.

The province will also hold a weekly COVID-19 press conference on Wednesdays.

"Alberta is going through a period of transition. As we shift out of crisis mode and move toward endemic response, we can make adjustments to the way we operate," Health Minister Jason Copping said...

... The province has 6,449 known active cases after it reported 593 infections from PCR tests.

COVID-19 cases are likely much higher due to testing limits and because the province does not count results from take-home rapid tests.

There are 989 people in hospital with the disease, including 70 in intensive care.

"It does not appear that easing measures has caused an uptick in numbers since we entered Step 1 on Feb. 8," Copping said.

"We continue to see a decline or plateau in both our lagging and leading indicators."...

Alberta’s COVID-19 hospitalization, ICU numbers drop again Thursday

The number of people in Alberta hospitals with COVID-19 dropped again on Thursday, according to Alberta Health’s website.

On Thursday, there were 967 in hospital with the virus. Of those people, 67 were receiving care in the ICU.

That’s compared to 989 people in hospital with COVID-19 on Wednesday, with 70 of those in the ICU.

Over the past 24 hours, six new COVID-19 deaths have been reported to Alberta Health. That brings Alberta’s COVID-19 death toll to 4,019.

During the same time period, the province completed 2,729 COVID-19 tests and confirmed 619 new cases. That puts the province’s positivity rate at 21.03 per cent...

Alberta reports 4 COVID-19 deaths in final daily update

The Alberta government issued its final daily COVID-19 update on Friday.

In it, the province reported four COVID-19 deaths, increasing the province's death toll to 4,023 since the pandemic began.

The province has 966 Albertans in hospital with the coronavirus, 62 of whom are receiving care in ICUs.

Alberta Health counted 502 new COVID-19 cases on Friday after nearly 3,000 PCR tests.

Alberta has 6,583 COVID-19 infections right now, but that number is likely much higher because of testing limitations and since the province doesn't count positive results from rapid tests.

On Wednesday, government and health officials announced Alberta would no longer update its COVID-19 website daily on weekdays.

Instead, the province will announce its COVID-19 data and give live updates on Wednesdays...

Alberta are Omicron subvariant BA.2

Alberta’s chief medical officer of health said Wednesday that the Omicron subvariant BA.2 is now the dominant COVID-19 strain in the province.

“As of March 21, approximately 60 per cent of positive cases are BA.2, so it is now the dominant strain of Omicron in the province,” Dr. Deena Hinshaw explained.

She said Alberta continues to screen all PCR tests for variants of concern.

BA.2 is more transmissible, Hinshaw said, but doesn’t appear to be causing more severe disease in other jurisdictions than the first Omicron variant BA.1.

“While this is good news, we only have to look back to the fifth wave to see that a virus that is more transmissible can cause a large impact at a population level, even if the risk of severe outcomes are the same or lower for individuals.

Alberta’s top doctor said that means those at risk of severe outcomes should revisit their precautionary measures and everyone should get all their vaccine doses.

“A booster now will provide important added protection in the coming months.”

Wednesday’s news conference marked the first weekly COVID-19 update. Alberta is moving to weekly in-person media availabilities and weekly updates of the online pandemic data.

Wednesday’s update included statistics from Friday to Monday.

Hinshaw said there are currently 956 Albertans in hospital with COVID-19, 56 of whom are being treated in ICUs...

• The government has now moved to a once-a-week reporting schedule set for each Wednesday.

• The province reported 30 new COVID-19 deaths between March 23 and March 30. A total of 4,612 Albertans have died of COVID-19.
• Between March 23, which was the last time COVID-19 figures were reported, and Wednesday, the daily positivity rate fluctuated between 21.7 per cent and 27.1 per cent, with an average of 24.5 per cent — an increase from the 22 per cent average in the previous seven days.
• There were 4,612 new cases reported between March 23 and 30. The case count includes only those who test positive on a PCR test, which most Albertans can't access.
• Alberta Health Minister Jason Copping gave an update on COVID-19 in the province Wednesday.
• Wastewater surveillance data shows signs of rising transmission in Calgary and Edmonton, Copping said.
• Copping said it's not surprising that COVID is spreading as the vast majority of public health measures in the province have been lifted.
• "There are simply more opportunities for the virus to spread," he said.
• Starting April 1, any interested pharmacy in the province will be able to order Paxlovid treatments and distribute it to Albertans who meet the eligibility criteria.

COVID-19 in Alberta: 990 people in hospital as of Wednesday

Government of Alberta officials are expected to provide an in-person COVID-19 update on Thursday, but the province still released the COVID-19 data for the past week as scheduled Wednesday afternoon.

There were 990 people in hospital with COVID-19 as of Wednesday afternoon, with 44 of those people receiving care in the ICU.

The province confirmed an additional 30 COVID-19 deaths, bringing the provincial death toll to 4,104 since the pandemic began in March 2020.

Since last Wednesday’s report, the province has confirmed an additional 5,549 cases from 21,314 tests...

Alberta sees increase in COVID-19 transmission, leading indicators

Alberta's chief medical officer of health says it's clear there's been a rise in COVID-19 transmission but she won't say if it's a sixth wave yet.

The province reported 6,181 new COVID-19 cases from PCR tests, 37 deaths and a total of 1,053 hospitalizations, including 48 ICU admissions.

The average positivity rate remained stable at 26.6 per cent, but wastewater levels increased in Edmonton, Calgary and many other communities, Health Minister Jason Copping said.

"This is not surprising, given the transmissibility of BA.2 and the increase in contacts as people resume their normal routines," he said.

"We may see some further increase over the next few weeks but we are prepared for it."

Dr. Deena Hinshaw agreed the rise is not unexpected and does not know the magnitude of it or how long it will last.

"Whatever we term it, whether it's called a sixth wave or whether we're talking about a rise in transmission we've seen, we certainly all know the kinds of things that can help protect ourselves and those around us, and those are the same things that we've been talking about for a long time," she said, referring to vaccines, masking and handwashing...

Forty-nine more COVID-19-related deaths were reported in Alberta Wednesday as the province continues to see a rise in the number of people in hospital with the illness.

The province provided its weekly COVID update Wednesday with data from April 12 to 18.

As of Wednesday's update, there are 1,126 people in hospital with COVID, up from 1,053 last week. Included in the 1,126 are 43 people being treated in ICU, a slight decline from the 46 reported last week...

Alberta added 62 COVID-19 deaths in seven days as hospitalizations continued to see a slight increase.

The province averaged a positivity rate of 25.7 per cent after it added 6,569 cases from PCR tests between April 19-25.

There are 1,220 Albertans with COVID-19 in hospital, including 47 in intensive care.

"I'm pleased to report that we continue to see signs of slowing transmission in Alberta," Health Minister Jason Copping told reporters on Wednesday...

Alberta reported its weekly COVID-19 data on Wednesday, and while transmission seems to be declining, hospitalizations are continuing to increase, the health minister said.

From April 26 to May 2, Alberta averaged a positivity rate of 23 per cent, Jason Copping said, down from 25.9 per cent the week before...

...There are 1,267 people in hospital with COVID-19, 46 of whom are in ICU.

Alberta officials were cautiously optimistic on Wednesday as the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 dropped over last week.

Between May 3 and May 9, the number of people in hospital with COVID-19 dropped to 1,225, with 37 of those people in the ICU.

That’s compared to 1,267 in hospital as of last week’s update with 46 people in the ICU.

“It’s still early days,” Health Minister Jason Copping said. “All these numbers fluctuate from day to day, and they won’t necessarily drop in a straight line from here...

Alberta's chief medical officer of health says the high number of COVID-19 deaths in the past few weeks are likely the tail end of the Omicron BA.2 subvariant surge.

Another 55 deaths were reported during the six-day stretch from May 10 to 15. During the previous week, the seven-day period of May 3 to 9, there were 70 deaths reported...

....Over the May 10 to 15 period, the daily average for COVID-19 hospitalizations was 1,190 people, including 39 in intensive care. At the last update, there were 1,225 Albertans in hospital, including 37 in ICU.

The seven-day PCR test-positivity rate is 19.9 per cent, compared to 20.72 last week...

COVID-19: Alberta ‘past the peak’ of BA.2, but identifies first case of new subvariant BA.4

Wastewater and PCR testing data shows Alberta is coming down from the latest wave of COVID-19, officials announced on Wednesday.

“The peak of BA.2 cases has passed and the current wave is receding,” Health Minister Jason Copping told reporters.

Between May 17 and May 23, the province’s PCR positivity rate ranged from 13.7 per cent to 20.4 per cent, with an average of 17.5 per cent for the week.

That’s compared to an average of 20 per cent for the last reporting period, Copping said.

Wastewater levels are coming down as well, he announced.

“We are turning the corner,” he said.

But as it appears Alberta is coming out of the BA.2 Omicron subvariant wave, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health announced the province confirmed its first case of a new subvariant over the past week...

...On Wednesday, Copping and Hinshaw both talked about the number of Albertans hospitalized with COVID-19 dropping.

As of last week’s update, there were 1,165 Albertans in hospital with the virus, with 42 of those people in the ICU. On Wednesday, there were 1,040 in hospital with 31 of those people receiving care in the ICU.

Between May 17 and May 23, the province confirmed 2,737 new cases of COVID-19 from 16,053 PCR tests. Officials have said the number of positive cases in the province is likely much higher due to the limited access to PCR testing.

During the same time period, an additional 55 COVID-19 deaths were reported to Alberta Health...
