Alberta passed an important COVID-19 mile marker on Tuesday ? moving in the wrong direction ? with 301 patients now being treated in hospitals for the illness.

Last week, the province postponed moving to Step 3 of its reopening plan, citing hospitalization numbers as one key reason for that decision.

Health Minister Tyler Shandro made the announcement on March 22, when there were 280 COVID-19 patients in Alberta hospitals. Shandro at the time called that number a "warning sign" the province had no choice but to take seriously.

Eight days later, another 21 patients are in hospital. Tuesday's total includes 58 people in ICU beds.

The province reported four more deaths on Tuesday and 576 new cases, bringing the total number of active cases to 7,975.

Screening identified 332 cases linked to more contagious variants of the coronavirus, which now account for 29.8 per cent of all active cases.

Laboratories conducted 8,078 tests over the past 24 hours. The positivity rate was 7.1 per cent.

All of those numbers are moving in the wrong direction...

Alberta reported 871 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, the highest single-day total in 11 weeks, but Premier Jason Kenney says his government is not considering tougher restrictions.

At an unrelated news conference in Lethbridge, Kenney said he will discuss the situation Thursday, ahead of the
Easter long weekend, with Dr. Deena Hinshaw, the province's chief medical officer of health.

Kenney said Alberta won't aim to drive COVID-19 infections to zero with curfews, stay-at-home orders or widespread business closures.

"The broader cost to peoples' lives, to their livelihoods, to our social and economic health, would be massive if we were to pursue true lockdown policies," he said.

"We think a lot of the spread that is happening now is because people have become tired of all of this. They've either kind of forgotten about the guidelines or they just wished them away."

With Easter and spring holidays coming up, Kenney asked people stay at home.

"Please don't socialize outside of your family group or your close contact cohort. The vast majority of transmission happens at home."

Wednesday's new case total was the highest since Jan. 13, when the province reported 965 new cases. The graph (above) tracking daily caseloads since then is U-shaped, as numbers declined in mid-January and throughout February, before rising again in recent weeks.

Active cases across the province hit 8,350 on Wednesday, an increase of 375 from the day before and the highest number seen since Jan. 25.

Hospitalizations remained at 301, though the number of patients in ICU beds rose by three, to 61.

Like much of the world, Alberta has seen a surge in cases linked to what health officials call variants of concern, which spread more quickly than the original strain of the coronavirus.

On Wednesday, screening identified 406 new cases linked to those variants, an increase of 74 from the previous day.

Variant cases now account for 31.9 per cent of all active cases...

Premier Jason Kenney announced Thursday that Alberta is into the third wave of COVID-19 and warned that in the race between variants and vaccines, "variants are winning."

Kenney said he was hoping to tell Albertans that the province had turned a corner in the fight against COVID-19 and that people could celebrate the long weekend with extended family and friends.

"Unfortunately, we're not in that situation today," Kenney said at a news conference. "Instead of delivering a message of openness and optimism, I'm here instead with a plea: Please, please, follow Alberta's health restrictions and guidelines this weekend and in the weeks to come."

He said Alberta has entered a third wave of the pandemic...

...On Thursday, Alberta reported 875 new cases of the illness, 322 of those involving the variant strains.

The variant strains, more infectious than the original strain, have pushed the number of active cases in the province to 8,653.

Variants of concern now account for one-third of active cases of COVID-19 in the province.

"Here's the blunt reality that we simply cannot wish away right now: in the race between vaccines and variants of COVID-19, the variants are winning," Kenney said.

There are 292 people in hospital with the disease, 59 of them in intensive care.

A case-to-hospitalization ratio is now at six per cent, he said. That means the variant is sending more people to hospital than the original virus...

Alberta is seeing its highest number of daily cases of COVID-19 in months, with an estimated 1,100 new infections reported Friday.

It is the most new cases seen in a single day since the first week of January.

On Thursday, Premier Jason Kenney said the province is seeing a new wave of COVID-19 infections and it's up to Albertans to comply with health restrictions to bring cases down.

The province is only reporting preliminary data over the Easter long weekend, but will have full data available Monday.

Provincial labs completed about 13,300 tests tests for the virus on Thursday, with a positivity rate of eight per cent.

Another 300 additional cases of variants of concern have been detected. As of Friday, 33 per cent of active cases are variants of concern.

Hospitalizations "remain stable," Friday's update said.

The last full update on Thursday saw 292 patients in hospital being treated for the disease, including 59 in intensive care beds...

EDMONTON -- For the second day in a row, Alberta reported an estimated 1,100 cases of COVID-19.

In a limited update given on Twitter Saturday by Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta's Chief Medical Officer of Health, it was reported that the province?s positivity rate is now nine per cent.

Before Friday, the province?s positivity rate had not exceeded eight per cent on a single day since early January.

Half of those represent additional cases of variants of concern, with 550 cases ? Alberta?s highest amount of variants of concern reported in a single day.

35 per cent of all active reported COVID-19 cases in Alberta are variants of concern, an increase from Friday?s 33 per cent.

The number of deaths was not disclosed.

According to Hinshaw, hospitalizations remain stable. No further details were given as to the exact number of hospitalizations or how many people are in ICU.

More than 12,000 laboratory tests were completed and 10,000 more vaccine doses were delivered...

Alberta public health officials are investigating two workplace outbreaks of the P1 variant of the novel coronavirus, Dr. Deena Hinshaw said Monday.

One outbreak involves three work sites in the North and Central zones, while a separate one involves a workplace in the Calgary Zone.

Hinshaw, the province's chief medical officer of health, said one outbreak has been linked to three confirmed cases of the P1 variant first identified in Brazil, while the other outbreak has one confirmed case of the P1 variant.

The first outbreak "appears linked to a large employer with multiple sites across Western Canada," Hinshaw said in a lengthy post on Twitter.

"The outbreak started with a traveller returning to Alberta from out of province. To date, the spread has been confined to three work sites in Central and North Zone, where employees travelled between sites."

Officials have identified 26 COVID-19 cases among employees at those three sites and their household contacts, she said.

"So far, only three are confirmed P1 cases, but this will likely increase as more results come in."

The second, unrelated P1 outbreak has been reported at a workplace in Calgary Zone, Hinshaw said.

Five cases are currently linked to that outbreak, including one confirmed case of the P1 variant..
...Alberta Health updated its online data on Monday afternoon, tallying up case numbers confirmed from Thursday to Sunday. Those numbers were:

April 1, 1,081 new cases
April 2, 1,071 new cases
April 3, 948 new cases
April 4, 887 new cases

Variant cases reported over the same four-day period were:

April 1, 327 cases
April 2, 552 cases
April 3, 622 cases
April 4, 432 cases

As of Sunday, 312 patients were being treated in Alberta hospitals for COVID-19, including 76 in ICU beds.

Hinshaw said four more deaths have been reported to Alberta Health since April 1.

More than 9,102 tests were completed Sunday. The positivity rate was 9.9 per cent....

With the province on track to have up to 1,000 COVID-19 patients in hospital by the end of April, Alberta Premier Jason Kenney announced a return to Step 1 restrictions to try to slow the spread of highly contagious variants of the coronavirus.

Facing a growing third wave of the pandemic, the premier held a news conference Tuesday along with Dr. Deena Hinshaw, the province's chief medical officer of health.

"Today, I am here to announce new measures that will help to stop the spike of COVID-19 measures in our province," Kenney said. "This is not an easy announcement to make or a step that we are in any way taking lightly."

Last week, Kenney urged Albertans to follow the health measures already in place to stop the spread of the virus.

Yet cases have continued to rise sharply over the past week, Kenney said Tuesday, averaging almost 1,000 new cases a day over the long weekend. The surge in variants of concern has also accelerated.

Variant cases went from about 100 a day three weeks ago to 676 on Tuesday, he said, and variants now make up more than 40 per cent of total active cases...

Alberta reports 1,351 new COVID-19 infections Wednesday, identifies 575 variant cases

Alberta reported an additional 1,351 infections of COVID-19 on Wednesday, bringing the province?s total of active cases to 11,464.

Health officials have also identified 575 new cases of variants of concern, accounting for 43.2 per cent of currently active cases.

A total of 333 people were being treated in hospitals across Alberta, with 79 of them being cared for in ICUs.

One additional death was reported by Alberta Health on Wednesday: a man in his 60s living in the North zone. The case did not have any comorbidities. Two-thousand-two Albertans have died from COVID-19 since last year.

A total of 755,831 doses of vaccine had been administered to Albertans as of Wednesday, with 133,401 people being fully immunized with two shots...

Highly contagious variants of the coronavirus are now the dominant strains pushing Alberta's third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, says the province's top public health doctor.

Alberta reported 717 new cases of COVID-19 linked to highly contagious variants of the coronavirus on Thursday. People infected with those variants now make up 44.8 per cent of all active cases in the province.

"We have now reached the point where variants of concern are the dominant strains of new COVID-19 cases in our province," Dr. Deena Hinshaw, the province's chief medical officer of health, said at a news conference.

Alberta reported a total of 1,429 new cases on Thursday, the highest total seen this year.

The province has 12,187 active cases, and of that total 5,457 are linked to variants of concerns.

Screening in Alberta has now confirmed a total to date of 8,229 cases linked to variant B117, first detected in the United Kingdom. Another 26 cases have been linked to variant B1351, first detected in South Africa, and 23 cases have been linked to variant P1, which is now ravaging Brazil.

"By far, the most common is the UK variant is B117, which makes up 99 per cent of all of our variant cases confirmed to date," Hinshaw said. "We have now reached the point that if you test positive, you should assume you have the UK variant."...

Alberta's new cases numbers continue to climb as the province reported 1,521 new infections on Friday.

It's the highest single day tally since mid-December.

Provincial labs completed 15,611 tests for COVID-19 on Thursday, with a positivity rate around 9.7 per cent.

The province also reported an additional 674 new cases of variants of concern, which have become the dominant in Alberta. As of Friday, there are 5,937 active variant cases, about 45.5 per cent of active cases in the Alberta.

The number comes the same day that new COVID-19 restrictions on restaurants and bars take effect. Dine-in service has been suspended, though restaurants can offer patio dining as well as takeout and delivery.

Across the province, 333 people are being treated in hospital for COVID-19, including 83 in intensive care beds.

Two new deaths were reported Friday, bringing the total to 2007 since the start of the pandemic.

There are now 13,059 active cases of COVID-19, the first time the province has surpassed 13,000 since Jan.10...

Alberta's active COVID-19 cases continued to climb Saturday as the province announced its vaccine rollout will expand to more front-line health-care workers on Monday.

The province reported 1,293 new cases of COVID-19 and 876 new cases involving variants of concern. As of Saturday, there are 6,529 active variant cases, about 47.7 per cent of active cases in Alberta.

Provincial labs completed 14,371 tests for COVID-19 on Friday, with a positivity rate around 9.1 per cent.

Five new deaths were reported Saturday, bringing the total to 2,012 since the start of the pandemic.

Three of the deaths occurred in the Calgary zone, one in the South zone, and one death in the Edmonton zone was linked to an outbreak at Covenant Health St. Joseph's nursing home.

On Saturday, there were 349 people in hospital with the illness, including 84 in intensive care unit beds.

Across the province, 333 people were being treated in hospital for COVID-19 the previous day, including 83 in intensive care beds.

There are now 13,687 active cases of COVID-19 across the province, an increase of 628 active cases from Friday, which was the first time the province surpassed 13,000 since Jan.10...

EDMONTON -- Another 1,183 cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Alberta including 942 variant of concern cases.

In an update delivered Sunday on Twitter, Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw said 50.5 per cent of active cases in Alberta are variants of concern.

Of the 942 cases, 21 were the P.1 variant origintating in Brazil and 921 were the B.1.1.7 variant originating in the United Kingdom.

The province completed 14,861 tests to lower the positivity rate to 7.9 per cent after two days of it being above nine per cent.

Sunday's 1,183 cases is the highest daily amount of reported cases in 2021.

Hospitalizations and ICU admission increased by 27 and six people from Saturday for a provincial total of 376 and 90, respectively...

7,620 active variant cases in Alberta accounting for more than half of all cases

Alberta recorded 1,136 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday, with another 679 cases of variant strains detected.

There are 7,620 active variant cases in Alberta, which now account for 51.3 per cent of 14,849 active cases.

The large majority of the variant cases are the B117 variant, which was first detected in the United Kingdom.

However, the number of P1 variant cases, the highly infectious coronavirus variant traced back to Brazil, is starting to grow. There are 102 P1 cases as of Monday, up from 27 last Wednesday, with 82 of those cases in the Calgary zone.

There are 390 people in hospital with COVID-19, 90 of those patients in intensive care.

Five more people have died of the disease, bringing the provincial total to 2,018.

The province has not yet reported how many people had been vaccinated as of Sunday night, but as of Friday, 847,630 doses of vaccine have been administered...

The province continues to see a rise in the number of people being admitted to hospital for COVID-19, Alberta's top doctor said on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, 402 people were in hospital in Alberta with 88 of those patients in intensive care.

"Hospitalizations are increasing provincewide and cases continue to rise sharply," Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta's chief medical officer of health, said at a news conference. "My team is monitoring closely and if we do not see growth slowing soon, further measures may be required."

Alberta reported 1,081 new cases of COVID-19 and three more deaths, which brings the total number of deaths to 2,021.

It also recorded 705 more cases of the highly contagious variants of concern, which account for 52 per cent of active cases in Alberta.

"Looking at levels of transmission in our communities right now is like watching a flood rise higher and higher," Hinshaw said...

Alberta reports 1,412 new COVID-19 case

Another eight people have died from COVID-19 in Alberta, bringing the total number of deaths to 2,029.

The province reported another 1,412 new cases on Wednesday, bringing the number of active cases in Alberta to 15,569.

The number of new variant cases identified was 778. Variant strains now account for 52.6 per cent of all active cases.

There are 420 people being treated in hospital for COVID-19, with 92 of those patients in intensive care.

The province is on pace to reach ones million vaccine doses administered by midweek. By the end of the day Monday, 970,272 doses had been issued...

Alberta reported 1,646 new cases of COVID-19, the highest number of new cases reported in a single day since Dec. 13.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta's chief medical officer of health, updated the province on efforts to lessen the impact of the third wave of COVID-19.

Hinshaw said 1,020 cases of variants of concern were reported Thursday. Variants now account for 54 per cent of active cases, which now total 16,223.

Five more deaths were reported on Thursday.

There are 416 people now in hospital, 86 of them in intensive care.

Hinshaw announced Alberta Health Services will open two walk-in AstraZeneca vaccine clinics on Saturday in Calgary and Edmonton. Already, walk-in vaccinations are available at 26 participating pharmacies in Calgary and Edmonton.

She also announced that Alberta Health Services will soon implement a program to immunize eligible long-stay patients in acute-care facilities across the province...

Alberta confirmed 1,616 new cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, the province?s health authority said Friday afternoon.

That brings the total active cases across the province to 16,759, 53.5 per cent of which are variants of concern.

Also Friday, Alberta Health said 898 cases of variants had been identified, bringing the total number of active variant cases to 8,967.

There were 423 Albertans in hospital with the disease, including 93 who were being treated in ICU.

One week ago, on Friday, April 9, there were 333 people in hospital, including 83 in ICU...

EDMONTON -- Another 1,486 new cases of COVID-19 were reported Saturday, including 977 variant of concern cases.

In a limited update delivered over Twitter, Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw said the province completed 16,353 tests since the last update translating to a provincial positivity rate of 9.2 per cent.

Of the variant cases, 960 were new cases of the B.1.1.7 variant originating from the United Kingdom while 15 were the P.1 variant originating from Brazil. The remaining two cases were the B.1.351 variant originating from South Africa.

Saturday marked the 11th day of more than 1,000 new infections of COVID-19 reported.

Alberta currently has 17,307 active cases of COVID-19.

EDMONTON -- Alberta has 1,516 more COVID-19 cases reported with 800 variant of concern cases.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw reported the new cases in a limited update on Twitter Sunday afternoon.

Over 15,300 tests were completed to bring the province?s positivity rate to 9.8 per cent.

Three more people have died from COVID-19 in Alberta, raising the total to 2,040.

The province now has 17,935 total active cases of COVID-19.

There are currently 451 people in hospital with COVID-19 and 103 in ICU.

Hospitalizations increased since the last update by six people. Nine more people were admitted into ICUs since the last update.

The Calgary Zone continues to lead the province in hospitalizations with 187 in hospital. The Edmonton Zone has 150 in hospital while all other zones have less than 50...
