EDMONTON -- An Edmonton-area woman in her 30s is among the seven COVID-19 deaths reported in Alberta on Saturday.

She is the 18th Albertan under the age of 40 to die due to the coronavirus. Saturday's other deaths ranged in age from 70s to 90s and occurred as far back as November but are only now counted due to reporting delays.

Today's fatalities bring the province's total death toll to 1,818 after one death was removed after being determined to be not due to COVID-19.

Alberta added 380 new cases on Saturday, bringing its total up to 130,735. Active cases fell by 37, down to 4,803.

Hospitalizations continue to fall with 336 COVID-19 patients now receiving care, down 16 from Friday's report. The number of patients in intensive care units also fell, down by four to 51...

EDMONTON -- Alberta reported 328 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday. Active cases fell by 45 to 4,758.

An additional nine deaths were also reported. Three of the deaths were seniors in the Edmonton zone, and four were seniors in the Calgary zone.

The province completed 7,541 tests on Saturday.

There are currently 321 Albertans in hospital, and 53 of those are in intensive care...

Alberta reported 273 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday and another 16 deaths from the illness.

Though the deaths were reported to Alberta Health over the last 24 hours, 10 of them happened in December, one in January, and four in February.

There are 4,675 active cases in the province, with 324 patients being treated for the illness in hospitals, including 53 in ICU beds.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta's chief medical officer of health, provided her 174th update about the pandemic on Monday, and used the opportunity to highlight some of the progress the province has made in recent weeks.

The R-value or reproductive number over the past week was 1.03. That number was 0.93 in the Edmonton zone, 0.95 in the Calgary zone, and 1.13 for the rest of the province. When the reproduction number is greater than one, case numbers are rising...

...A total of 1,843 people have died from COVID-19 in Alberta since the pandemic began.

There are now 289 variant cases confirmed across the province, with 116 in the Calgary zone and 110 in the Edmonton zone...

Alberta reports 267 new COVID-19 cases as seniors prepare to be vaccinated

Alberta’s top doctor revealed more details about the province’s strategy to vaccinate seniors Tuesday while reporting a steady number of new COVID-19 infections.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw announced 267 new infections Tuesday and a positivity rate of 4.4%, which is similar to figures seen in recent days.

Another 11 people died of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing Alberta’s death toll to 1,853. There are also 326 people in hospital, including 51 in intensive care.

Alberta is preparing to expand COVID-19 vaccinations to all seniors born in 1946 or earlier. Starting February 24, all Albertans who turn 75 this year will be able to make a vaccine appointment through Alberta Health Services...

Alberta records its largest daily case count since early February, adds 430 new infections

EDMONTON -- Alberta recorded its largest daily increase in new COVID-19 cases since near the start of the month with 430 new infections reported on Wednesday.

The increase in the largest in one day since the 582 reported on Feb. 4.

Active cases continued to fall, down by 25 to 4,545, a level last seen in late October.

The number of active cases continues to decline but the rate of decrease has tailed off in the last week, with no triple-digit decreases since Feb. 17 and small increases recorded twice in the past week.

The province also reported 13 deaths, bringing its total to 1,866. Due to delays in death reporting only two of the deaths reported Wednesday occured in February, with five of them going back to December of 2020.

The number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients also continued its downwards trend with 307 reported in hospital, down 20 from Tuesday. The number of patients in intensive care units rose by five, up to 56.

The province reported 22 new variant cases of COVID-19, all of them the B.1.1.7 "U.K." variant. Eighteen of those cases were recorded in the Calgary health zone, which is significantly larger than the city itself...

399 new cases of COVID-19 confirmed in Alberta on Thursday

Alberta Health confirmed an additional 399 cases of COVID-19 were reported in the province over the last 24 hours on Thursday.

There were 280 people in hospital with 56 of those in the ICU.

Eight additional deaths were reported to Alberta Health over the past 24 hours, four of which were in the Edmonton zone.

A woman in her 30s, a woman in her 70s and a man in his 70s died. A woman in her 90s linked to the outbreak at Millwoods Shepherds Care Centre also died. Alberta Health said all four deaths included comorbidities.

Two deaths occurred in the Calgary zone: A man in his 80s and a man in his 90s — both with comorbidities.

A woman in her 40s with comorbidities died in the South zone.

A man in his 40s with unknown comorbidities also died. Alberta Health said the zone in which this man lived is unknown at this time because his primary address is still pending. Alberta Health said the health zone will be updated on the online dashboard once this information is updated in the provincial reporting system.

The province’s COVID-19 death toll now stands at 1,874.

There are now 4,484 active cases in the province, with the majority of those in the Calgary and North zones.

As of Thursday afternoon there were 1,510 active cases in the Calgary zone, while the North zone had 1,016 active cases...

Alberta confirms 356 new cases of COVID-19 Friday, 269 people in hospital

Alberta confirmed an additional 356 cases of COVID-19 on Friday, bringing the total number of Albertans who have had the novel coronavirus to 132,788.

The province completed 9,212 tests on Thursday, putting the positivity rate at 3.92 per cent.

As of Friday afternoon, there were 269 people in hospital with 55 of those in the ICU.

The hospitalization number is the main one to watch as it gets closer to March 1, the date Alberta’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw said would be the earliest date to move the province into Step 2 of reopening....

COVID-19: 415 new cases, 6 more deaths in Alberta on Saturday

Alberta Health confirmed 415 more cases of COVID-19 and six additional deaths from the disease on Saturday.

The province now has 4,546 active cases, 126,774 recoveries and 1,883 deaths.

As of Saturday, the Calgary zone has 1,545 active cases, the North zone has 1,044, the Edmonton zone has 926, the Central zone has 702 and the South zone has 314. There are 15 cases in unknown zones.

Alberta Health said 262 people are in hospital, with 51 of them in intensive care...

Alberta physicians continue to warn against further reopening as active COVID-19 cases rise Sunday

As Alberta added 301 new cases of COVID-19 and three deaths Sunday, some physicians in the province say they remain concerned about a potentially premature approval of the Stage 2 reopening plan.

“What we’ve seen happen with cases right now is that they’ve stopped decreasing and they’ve actually started to increase again, including variant cases,” said Dr. Tehseen Ladha, a University of Alberta professor and pediatrician, “which is really quite scary, knowing that the variant is so much more infectious than the regular COVID strain that we’ve been dealing with for the past year.”

The number of variant cases in the province has been on the rise. On Feb. 1, there were 51 total cases; the latest data from the province from Feb. 27 shows 430 total variant cases.

Active COVID-19 cases also rose slightly in Alberta Sunday. There are now 4,584 active cases — up by a net of 38. That means that new cases outweighed the 260 new recoveries and three deaths.

The three deaths announced Sunday were all seniors: an Edmonton zone woman in her 90s connected to the outbreak at Youville Home, a woman in the Edmonton zone in her 70s, and a man in the Calgary zone in his 70s. All three were believed to have comorbidities, according to Alberta Health. A total of 1,886 Albertans have died from the disease.

With COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations continuing to decline, Alberta eased some public health restrictions on Monday to allow fitness centres and libraries to partially reopen.

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney made the announcement at a news conference on Monday.

"Today, I am here to announce that Alberta is ready to safely and cautiously enter Step 2 of our path forward," Kenney said. "I want to thank every Albertan who has responsibly observed [public health] measures through Step 1 over the past several weeks to protect lives and our health-care system in the process.

"I know this has not been easy, especially with cold weather in February limiting our ability to gather outdoors. But the sacrifices Albertans have made are the reason that we're able to take another step forward today. COVID-19 is still here and it is still very much a threat to our health and our health-care system. Still, over the past few months, Alberta has made tremendous progress."

Libraries will be allowed to reopen as of Monday with 15 per cent of fire-code capacity and fitness centres will be allowed to resume low-intensity individual and group workouts for adults, Kenney said.

Alberta's new COVID-19 cases remain steady with 257 more infections

Alberta reported 257 new COVID-19 cases Tuesday and announced two more virus-related deaths.

Of the new cases, 35 are variants of concern, Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw said. Alberta has now seen 492 variant cases in total.

There are currently 261 people in hospital, a slight increase from Monday, including 54 in intensive care.

Hinshaw said the positivity rate is still hovering just below 5%.

On Monday, provincial officials announced Alberta would move into Step 2 of its phase reopening approach. However, it didn’t relax all the restrictions associated with Step 2. The only changes are that libraries are reopening and more activities will be allowed at indoor fitness centres..

BC health officials announce 438 new COVID-19 cases, two more deaths

British Columbia health officials announced 438 new test-positive COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, bringing the total number of recorded cases in the province to 81,367.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said due to some challenges with the provincial data reporting system over the past seven days, an additional 254 cases have been added to the overall total.

However, she noted this doesn’t include the 438 cases announced on Tuesday, 137 of which are new cases in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 249 in the Fraser Health region, 19 in the Island Health region, 16 in the Interior Health region, and 17 in the Northern Health region...

For the first time, an outbreak of COVID-19 in an Alberta long-term care facility has been linked to a highly contagious variant of the coronavirus.

The outbreak was confirmed late on Friday at Churchill Manor in Edmonton with a single case, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, the province's chief medical officer of health, said Wednesday at a news conference.

Since Friday, 27 staff and residents have tested positive for the coronavirus, she said, which includes 19 cases confirmed as positive for the variant.

"This is a reminder that of course we are not out of the woods yet with respect to COVID-19, and the rapid spread that is possible with the variant," Hinshaw said.

"Of course, it's very concerning to see an outbreak where we go from one case to 27 within a matter of days, and it's a reminder that all of us need to be taking the precautionary measures seriously every single day."...

Alberta to expand COVID-19 vaccine rollout starting March 15, health minister says
Province plans to give all adults their first doses by the end of June

Alberta will expand its COVID-19 vaccine rollout to include people under age 75 starting March 15, and if shipments arrive as scheduled, all adults in the province will receive their first dose by the end of June, the health minister says.

"By June 30, we expect to have offered every single adult in the province at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine," Health Minister Tyler Shandro said Thursday at a news conference.

Under the expanding vaccine program set to begin in less than two weeks, about 437,000 more people between the ages of 65 and 74 will become eligible for inoculations, Shandro said.

To avoid long delays for those making appointments, when Phase 2A begins on March 15 bookings will be offered in two-year age groups, Shandro said. On the first day, anyone aged 73 or 74 will be able to book.On the second day, eligibility will be expanded to include anyone aged 71 to 72, and so on from there...

...The province reported nine more deaths and 331 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday.

Hospitals were treating 245 patients for the illness, including 47 in ICU beds.

There are now 541 cases of people infected with two "variants of concern" in the province.

March 5 marks one-year anniversary since Alberta's first COVID-19 case

On the one-year anniversary of the first COVID-19 case reported in Alberta, 411 new cases were reported around the province on Friday.

This brings the total of active cases up to 4,639, after 10,559 COVID-19 tests were completed in the last 24 hours. Two new deaths in Alberta linked to COVID-19 were also reported on Friday.

Across the province, there are currently 243 in hospital with the disease, and 44 in intensive care.

On Friday, the province also reported 22 new cases of the COVID-19 variant that was first detected in the United Kingdom. The total number of active variant cases in the province is now 563...

Retail stores and malls will be allowed to increase their capacity to 25 per cent of fire-code, and youth sports teams and activities will be allowed to resume with up to 10 participants, Alberta's health minister announced Monday.

Tyler Shandro said with case counts and positivity rates continuing to decline, along with deaths and hospitalizations, it is now safe for the province to complete Step 2 of its reopening plan.

"The situation is changing and we need to change along with it," Shandro said Monday at a news conference. "We said that we'd complete Step 2 when it was safe to do so, and I believe that it now is.

"The time is right to keep moving safely forward, and at the same time there are reasons for us to remain cautious. We're not seeing the same sharp incline in cases that we saw in December. Cases have plateaued. And we still have to consider carefully how to get the balance right. But I believe that this step, the remainder of Step 2 today, is safe," he said.

All retail settings, including shopping malls, can now increase the number of customers from 15 per cent of fire code occupancy to 25 per cent, Shandro said. The change applies to stores and to common areas such as hallways and food courts.

Starting immediately, the Step 1 restrictions that applied to youth will be expanded to include members of college and university athletic programs. That means lessons, practices and physical conditioning will be allowed for those programs with a maximum of 10 participants in total, including coaches, trainers and participants.

Those who attend will still be required to observe physical distancing rules and should wear masks at all times, except during the actual training activity.

Restrictions are also being eased for child, youth and adult performances, including singing, theatre and the playing of wind instruments, though participants must follow the same restrictions as for youth sports.

Latest case numbers

Alberta reported six more COVID-19 deaths and 278 new cases on Monday, with 254 patients being treated for the illness in hospitals, including 36 in ICU beds.

Labs conducted about 5,500 tests over the past 24 hours, with a positivity rate of 5.4 per cent. Six new cases of the "variant of concern" were detected, bringing the total to 659...

EDMONTON -- Alberta reported 255 new infections of COVID-19 on Tuesday, bringing the province's total number of cases to 136,374.

Six more Albertans have died due to COVID-19 which brings the province's death toll to 1,926.

There are now 4,470 active cases with the province's seven-day moving average continuing to hold mostly steady in the mid-4,000 range.

Alberta also recorded a 4.58 per cent positivity rate based on just over 5,400 tests.

There have now been 687 variant cases reported in Alberta, including 28 reported Tuesday, all of them the variant first identified in the U.K.

Variant cases require a second screening of a positive test meaning the daily reported number is a mix of current and historical cases...
