EDMONTON -- Dr. Deena Hinshaw says Alberta’s COVID-19 numbers remain “very high” as she reported 843 new cases from 10,301 tests and 26 more deaths.

Alberta has 13,411 cases, 919 hospitalizations in total and 140 patients in ICU.

“Our health-care system remains under significant pressure,” the chief medical officer of health said.

“We are seeing a stabilization in cases, with occasional days of low new cases due to lower testing volumes, but overall, new case numbers, hospitalization, and ICU admissions for COVID-19 are still very high in our province.”

The province has registered 106,378 cases and 1,168 deaths since March.

VACCINE ROLLOUT

Alberta Health Services has administered 26,269 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine and plans to give out another 3,000 by the end of Tuesday, Health Minister Tyler Shandro said.

With that, Alberta will reach its “aggressive goal” of the 29,000 doses it said it would administer by the end of 2020...

Alberta expands COVID-19 vaccine program to include paramedics, EMTs
Alberta on track to complete first doses for all residents in senior-living centres by next week, premier says
CBC News ? Posted: Jan 11, 2021 1:30 PM MT | Last Updated: 12 minutes ago

Alberta will immediately expand its COVID-19 vaccination program to include all paramedics and emergency medical responders, Premier Jason Kenney says.

"By expanding eligibility to paramedics and emergency medical technicians today, and staff in COVID-19 units and medical surgical units last week … we are well on our way to get those populations immunized," Kenney said Monday at a news conference.

Kenney said all the provinces have to depend of the federal government to quickly procure and distribute vaccine.

"The bottom line is this," he said. "Alberta's capacity to give people the jab will soon outstrip available vaccine supplies and we are doing everything humanly possible to roll out these life-saving vaccines as quickly as they arrive."

Alberta reported 639 new cases on Monday and 23 more deaths. Across the province there were 13,917 active cases, with 811 people are being treated in hospitals for the illness, including 130 in ICU beds. ..

Alberta’s contact tracing improving as 652 new COVID-19 cases identified, 38 more deaths

Alberta’s contact-tracing system is improving and greatly reducing the number of COVID-19 cases with an unknown source, Dr. Deena Hinshaw said Tuesday, as the province added 652 new cases of the disease.

The province’s chief medical officer of health said Alberta Health Services is “making progress” in getting through the backlog.

“We are now able to reach out within 24 hours to all high-priority cases of COVID-19, including those involving school-aged children, health-care workers, long-term care workers and those who are involved in critical response,” Hinshaw said

inshaw added that currently, 47 per cent of active cases — which now sit at 13,220 — have an unknown source. Comparing to mid-December, Hinshaw said that between Dec. 10 and 15, the provincial number of unknown cases was closer to 80 per cent.

The province said last week that it currently has approximately 1,250 contact tracers working. Work continues to hire and train hundreds more and AHS said it now hopes to have over 2,000 contact tracers in place by early February.

However, Hinshaw cautioned that there will always be cases with an unknown source.

“Even with a fully functioning system, there are always a portion of cases, usually around 30 per cent, where the source of exposure cannot be identified,” she said.

The 652 new cases identified Tuesday come from 9,336 tests administered on Monday. That leaves the province with a positivity rate of around 6.8 per cent, Hinshaw said...

EDMONTON -- Alberta reported a provincial positivity rate of 5.3 per cent on Wednesday, announcing 875 new cases amongst 16,000 tests the day before.

There are 820 Albertans in hospital, 137 of whom are in ICUs.

Chief Medical Officer of Health also reported 23 more COVID-19-related deaths. While many were linked to outbreaks at care homes in Edmonton and Calgary, Hinshaw reminded the public: "They ranged in age from 48 to 96. Men and women whose passing leaves a whole in the lives of those who cared about them."

The top doctor sent a message of encouragement to Albertans who were growing tired of living through a pandemic, calling her frequent phrase, "We are all in this together," less slogan than an "irrefutable, biological fact" of the disease...

With case numbers falling, Alberta will ease some public health restrictions starting on Monday, allowing hair salons, barbershops and other personal-services businesses to reopen by appointment only.

Also starting on Jan. 18, up to 10 people will be allowed to gather outdoors, and up to 20 people will be allowed to attend funerals provided all who attend wear masks and maintain two metres of physical distancing.

Indoor gatherings remain prohibited and funeral receptions are still not allowed.

"Alberta's case numbers and hospitalizations remain high and they pose a threat to our health-care system capacity and they continue to," Shandro said Thursday at a news conference.

The changes will impact hair salons, barber shops, esthetics, manicure and pedicure businesses, reflexology, piercing and tattoo shops, and other personal and wellness services throughout the province. Appointments should be limited to one-on-one services and businesses, he said, and clients are expected to keep following the public health guidelines...

As the province awaits its next vaccine shipment, the province continues to see declining rates of COVID-19.

On Monday, Alberta reported 474 new cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours. There are 739 people in hospital with the disease, 120 of whom are in intensive care.

The province also reported 11 more deaths, bringing the total number of deaths to 1,447.

"Over the last month we've seen active cases, hospitalizations, ICU admissions and our transmission rate decline," Dr Deena Hinshaw, Alberta's chief medical officer of health, said at a news conference. "This is a testament to the hard work and sacrifices of so many."

But Hinshaw emphasized that case numbers in Alberta are still very high. Three months ago, on Oct. 18, the active case count was just over 3,000, while on Monday it was 11,923.

"Critically, on Oct. 18, there were 120 people in hospital with COVID-19," she said. "Today we have more than six times that total.

COVID-19 variant may have entered the community, Alberta health minister says
Province reports 25 additional deaths due to COVID-19 Monday
CBC News ? Posted: Jan 25, 2021 1:30 PM MT | Last Updated: 1 minute ago

A variant of the COVID-19 virus known for its ease of transmission appears to have already entered the community, Alberta Health Minister Tyler Shandro said in a news conference Monday.

"Let me be blunt: This now is very concerning," Shandro said.

Alberta has found 20 cases of the variant first identified in the United Kingdom, with all but one directly linked to travel, he said.

That one case of the B117 variant has raised concerns that there may be more cases in the province.

There are two coronavirus variants of concern, one first identified in the U.K. and one in South Africa.

Five cases of the variant first identified in South Africa have also been found in Alberta, all related to travel.

The ease in which these variants spread would cause huge spikes in Alberta's COVID-19 case numbers, hospitalizations and deaths, particularly without health measures in place to slow transmission, Shandro said.

"These variants can spread very quickly," Shandro said. "The emerging research indicates that they have a significantly higher infection rate, estimated to be 30 to 50 per cent higher than the strain that we've had in Alberta to date."...
